brandonk 04-10-2002, 10:05 PM I must say the number one thing thus far is that you can no longer post replies to offers... Umm... so does that defeat the purpose of a FORUM?!? YES...
I have a hunch that even more restrictions are going to be put in place and things are going to take a nose dive...
I'll probably end up liking the RS forum better, it's not there to make money.
headsurfer 04-10-2002, 10:07 PM The levels the playing field for all of the hosts that want to post. Everyone will have the chance to have their posts stay on the first ad page longer.

Might i suggest you take out the time restrictions then. one day limit is a little pointless.

appletreats 04-10-2002, 10:15 PM I like no replies. Stops things from bouncing around. The special offers area really isn't much of a forum, it's like a classified ads board. No replies good.
Marts 04-10-2002, 10:41 PM I have to aggree with the No Reply rule. Makes it easier for everyone to be heard

It's the Golden Rule!
You know, The man with the Gold makes the Rules! :dgrin:
It does Level the playing Field. Since they permit modifications to the Original post to clear up any issues, I wouldn't lose to much sleep over this change.
My 2 cents!
CChard 04-10-2002, 11:36 PM Just use PM to talk about offers ;)
MattF 04-11-2002, 06:34 PM Why can we only post once every 5 days in advertising.. INCLUDING replies?
This is because replies act as a bump, some hosts will annouce a special offer yet be very sketchy on the details delibrately, so people posts questions and then the host will reply with answers shortly after, hence unfairly keeping the thread *hot* and on top.
Whereas, non-abusing host will post an offer with as much information as possible and when/if a question (via pm, or whatever method) is asked will edit the main post with details accordingly.
I'm sure the non-host visiting members will agree that creating a level playing field is much better idea.

I think that's going a bit far, the advertising forums are merely an extension of the main forums and will be governed with additional restrictions for obvious reasons, I see a lot of hosts are taking the advertising forums for granted.
TheException 04-11-2002, 07:27 PM Well said Matt.
I have to agree with you completely.
Keep up the good work, your forums have become my second home, as it has for many others! :)

I think you're wrong... In many of the advertising forums (the ones that I read) I see lots of replies discussing the offer and the company that is offering it. And I'm not talking about asking questions to the host, but really discussing it. I think it's sad that this is going to happen, but you know the motto of the time--whatever.
Predictions:
1) Other "extensions" of the site will have this restriction enabled as well.
2) You'll be charged $.25 for each post.
...I think that I'm getting used to the RS forum....
allera 04-11-2002, 07:49 PM If you want to discuss a company's advertisement, take it to another forum (Web Hosting or Dedicated/Colo would be appropriate). That way the ad stays at a good location for a while and people still get to talk about it.
I think it's a good idea. Keep it up Robert and Matt.

Alter the sql to apply to only the advert forums so it will not sort posts by the last reply date but by the topic starter date, this will eliminate bumbing by replies and still allow replies..
Heck, if you can't find a hack to do this, I'll even sit down and figure it out for you and send you the code you need to alter....
I'm not exactly upset about the replies being taken away, I'm just sick of everyone bitching about it :D

I'm pretty sure that this is the last thing the moderators would want. It certainly doesn't simplify anything....
Chicken 04-12-2002, 07:44 PM Well, as I said in another thread (I seem to prefece posts by saying that now), I do think that a sort oder by thread date hack would be possibly the best of both worlds. People would get to post threads, they'd stay in order, yet they'd also be able to post replies, and bumping wouldn't be an issue.
In truth, much of the discussion in the some of the ad forum threads was pretty general (not even relating to the specific offer posted), and in many cases I do think companies can be discussed on the main forums, though replies from the host would have to be limited, if at all. Blah blah blah, see guidelines, blah blah blah :D
