Hey guys... always reading the board, nice place here, so this is my first question.

I have a machine im lookin to place a domain on but to register it, Ive seen prices anywhere from 10 bucks all the way UP to 100 bucks. What are the differences in prices? All I need is a place to register it, cheap honestly. Any input would be greatly appreciated :)

Don't pay more than $25-30/year at the most, don't go with Network Solutions/VeriSign, and look at the Domains board here at WHT. Price differences are based on greed level of the company selling the domains.

I say dont pay more then $15 per year...

you should really search this forum so that you'll get a realistic description of the different registrars that have been famous or infamous amongst this forumers ;)

ALOT of people have recommended (although i never purchased a domain from them - but had good response from their support) -http://www.000domains.com

i'd say set your limit at $15-20 per year for a regular domain, and stay away from netsol, versign, and register.com!

Companies in the domain sales business have a number of different business models.

There are resellers, who sell for a registrar. There are registrars who sell directly to the user, and as you have seen - prices range from $6.25 for a .com from an Indian registrar, to upwards of $100 a domain year.

The things you need to look for are support and service levels, DNS services, optional services like domain forwarding, full control over your domain information, any hidden fees etc.

The advice to stay at or under $15 for a .com is valid - however the registrar who sells more domains than anyone else on the planet charges significanly more than this - right or wrong.

Good luck. It's a competative market, and there are many choices - some who are recommended on these forums are slammed on others, and vs vs. Some people are very happy paying a few dollars less and sacrificing service or response to support tickets, and some get away with no support required and can deal with the lack of a working control panel - or a requirement to send notarized paperwork to the registrar to transfer a domain, etc. All options exist :).

I regularly see registrars recommended whom I would not sign up with if they were the only choice for .com domains. To each his own.

there are places where you can get domains for $10 and below which offer good service, just as there are ones that charge $35 and offer lousy service.
