Thanks, mattcas. .::DefCon::. 04-10-2002, 03:16 PM Cool! Really! How much power would that be? markblair 04-10-2002, 03:48 PM From what I've heard, it's not just one light for each one you see. There are supposedly something like 20 lights per beam so the strength is spread out. It's still pretty powerful as you can see how high they reach. alpha 04-10-2002, 04:20 PM that looks pretty nice. a nice memorial... yea, i wish I could see that in person JayC 04-10-2002, 05:12 PM Originally posted by markblair There are supposedly something like 20 lights per beam so the strength is spread out.If I remember correctly, there are 88 lights, each 20 inches in diameter. The light images formed are quite a lot more narrow than the towers themselves were (which is obvious if you're used to seeing those buildings there instead), but still it's big and visible pretty far out from the city. The lights also aren't in exactly the same location; they're a little farther north than the towers were. The original plan was for this to be in place just through April 13, but I haven't heard if that has been changed as some people suggested. It is an impressive sight in person. Still, I sort of lean toward supporting turning them off on schedule. As an ongoing memorial I think it's a little too obtrusive. Avail 04-10-2002, 06:56 PM Wow. I wonder who's idea this was. SoftWareRevue 04-10-2002, 07:10 PM Originally posted by akashd I'll be (hopefully) flying out this saturday to see it.... :agree: Pick me up on the way. ;) richy 04-10-2002, 07:13 PM i hope they decide to rebuild one tower twice the height just to show a big V to the people who think they can get what they want by hurting innocent people. use the rest of the space for something appropriate, not just a memorial in the usual sense but something constuctive, let something good come of this. a refuge, a school, something like that. id love to see the lights it must be amazing. i hope this is used as an oppertunity to both do some good and also show that people arent beaten by things like this. it should make us stronger. srry if this offends anyone, i just tend to see the good things, im a positive person and i like to see a glass half full (after drinking the other half) and i see an oppertunity here to show how proud you americans are in your country and how strong your spirit is. best wishes from england. viGeek 04-10-2002, 07:32 PM I took a drive up to North New Jersey, to check it out. You could see it about 25 miles away in jersey. and then when we got up close at the jersey city water front. all i gota say is WOW. coolguy23 04-10-2002, 10:53 PM i got an idea! why don't you make a stensil and palce it over the lights for free advertising ;) j/k that is pretty awesome, i think they put it up couple of weeks ago JayC 04-11-2002, 03:47 AM Originally posted by coolguy23 think they put it up couple of weeks ago March 11, six months after September 11. akashik 04-12-2002, 01:15 AM I think it looks great. Considering all the possible cheesy things they could have done, two solid white lights pointing heavenward was a great idea. In my opinion I think they should rebuild the towers just as they were as far as sticking it to the bad guys. A memorial of sorts in the grounds for everyone killed of course. Just my 2c Greg Moore JayC 04-12-2002, 03:26 AM Originally posted by akashik In my opinion I think they should rebuild the towers just as they were as far as sticking it to the bad guys. The thing is, there may never be buildings built that tall again. One thing that was proven on that day is that they can't be evacuated fast enough. The thinking had always been that they would never have to be -- fires, the most pressing problem, would always be confined to just a few floors, and only those few would have to be emptied. No one will ever again accept the idea of a building that would take hours to evacuate. So probably there will be on the site a few shorter buildings, maybe 25 to 30 floors. And certainly a prominent memorial. I was just reading an article about Oklahoma City, and how some people there avoid going near the site where the Murrah Building once stood. But there's a new federal building nearby, and some of the former employees of that building will have to be there. I wonder why some of the feeling among some New Yorkers (including myself) is based on the same emotion: while I never will and certainly don't want to forget September 11, neither do I want to be reminded of it every day -- or every night, by the presence of those bold bright lights. Maybe that's why while I appreciate the Tribute in Light (the official name) and what it stands for I think it's good that it won't be there forever. In a way I like that its presence and its passing might represent a kind of transition: the void left in the city's skyline is filled now with a less substantive presence, almost as if the memory of the towers had taken form. In a few more days that form will fade away; the memory will remain. Bogdan 04-12-2002, 03:32 AM I went to the city last saturday for the first time since 9/11 to see the lights. I was observing it about 20ft. away.. looks really nice and bright... Two beams consist of multi-beams hehe.. I found the whole place to be really strange, especially when you see huge holes in the buildings. Very sad. :( Acronym BOY 04-12-2002, 05:49 AM I can see them even before I get on the Throgs Neck and seeing as I dont go onto that island all too much I guess thats as close as i will be getting to them, but you can still see them from the water in Sands Point. :) ****ing terrorists! mkaufman 04-12-2002, 05:09 PM I'll be out in NYC in a few days to check out the lights and I'll be hoping I can find a wireless access point there for the internet :) JayC 04-13-2002, 02:52 PM Originally posted by mkaufman I'll be hoping I can find a wireless access point there for the internet :) Not likely. We don't have any of that modern high-tech stuff in New York. :) Zorbs 04-13-2002, 06:49 PM That is a really nice picture. One strange thing though, is that the water almost looks like a Bryce render. JayC 04-13-2002, 08:26 PM Originally posted by Zorbs That is a really nice picture. One strange thing though, is that the water almost looks like a Bryce render. Actually, that picture looks to me like it might be one of the "artist's renderings" that were released before the project was actually in place. In any case, it's clearly been heavily enhanced. By the way, the display will end at dawn on Sunday the 14th, just a few hours away. But Mayor Bloomberg sort of hinted today that it or something similar might be part of the eventual permanent memorial. |
