View Full Version : Sorry! The administrator has specified that you can only do one search every 20 secon
pmak0 09-07-2005, 04:41 PM I've been getting the "Sorry! The administrator has specified that you can only do one search every 20 seconds." error a lot when I research about various things.
Could the search time limit be made more lenient?
Every 20 seconds is very lenient.
blue27 09-07-2005, 05:14 PM You can't wait for 20 seconds between searches?

I can, but if the server can handle it, I'd rather not wait. I think vBulletins are set to 20 second search limit by default so perhaps it wasn't put into place deliberately, just left there since it was the default.
It's not that I spam alot of useless searches. Sometimes I'll get a search with no results, for example, so then I'll immediately reissue a new search which hits the 20 second limit.
Or I'll want to search simultaneously for "dual p3" and "dual piii".
Dan L 09-07-2005, 05:59 PM I agree that the search could be better, but it's already been decided that no mods will be made to vB2.
You'll have to live with it :)

Wouldn't shortening the search timeout be a simple "configuration change", rather than a "mod"?
Dan L 09-07-2005, 06:05 PM Yes but it would have to go through iNet, which is sort of like Congress!
blue27 09-08-2005, 11:47 AM It's not an issue of how easy it is to change, it's an issue of why.
There is no reason to change it. Why put extra load on the servers or give spammers one more tool?
pmak0 09-08-2005, 01:57 PM There is no reason to change it.
There is a reason---so that fewer legitimate search requests get denied (which happens to me alot when I'm doing research on something).
blue27 09-08-2005, 01:59 PM I guess there is no point in arguing.
The rule is not going to be changed because one member is too impatient to wait a whole 20 seconds to do another search.

It is just 20 seconds they could make it a 90 seconds like posting. Would that make it even better?
SoftWareRevue 09-08-2005, 02:37 PM I'm sure no one uses the Search as much as anon-e-mouse.
So, if it's good enough for her, it's good enough for me. :)

Heh :P It does get a bit of a beating at times :)

Just like the 90 second posting rule, that 20 seconds can be the longest 20 seconds there is! :D

But Jan's on dialup, so it takes 20 seconds to load the search results page. :buck:
I'm currently on dialup, while our adsl service gets transfered to our new home. Freakin' Tel$tra stuffed it up, and I have to wait another 4 more business days.
anon-e-mouse 09-09-2005, 02:45 AM I only use dialup when ADSL is down for whatever reason. But I don't have a high speed connection like some of ya do ;)
Aussie Bob 09-09-2005, 03:10 AM I'm currently slaving away on 56kbps dialup here. Oh the humanity. :bawling:

What's Dialup ? is it still legal ?
I wasn't aware modern machines could run below 1500 k
Doc
Kimmikat 09-09-2005, 08:01 AM For those still on dial-up, maybe increase the wait time to 20 minutes?

It's like I went back in time, to the year 1999.
Ok Homer, think - you've travelled back in time - don't panic - you have to warn the people that Y2K was basically a yawn.
:homer:
According to the nice Tel$tra lady, my ADSL should be finally transfered to our new home, by Tuesday next week. Good old Tel$tra in action.
magicalhost 09-28-2005, 07:13 PM Spam filters???
Also I see:
Sorry! The administrator has specified that users can only post one message every 90 seconds.
Dan L 09-28-2005, 07:41 PM Yeah, the 90 sec rule has been there for a while. It keeps people from spamming. It's an unfortunate must for a forum of this size..
