Is anyone seeing an increase of customers getting taken in by their confusing mail saying that their domains are up for renewal and trying to transfer domains to their services?

We had two customers in the past 2 weeks send them multi-year renew money and of course their domains are locked so they did not get anything for their money.

They are not playing very nice.

Make sure your clients unstand this is a scam and not to respond to it.

We have on the ones that have asked but with as many customers as we have it is hard to tell them all :(

Maybe we need to make up a page on our website to warm people.

thanks!!

Been dealing with these scum bags trying to steal our customers for years now. Somebody needs to put an end to this company, one way or the other!

I've been getting those for a few years now. I sometimes get them in the mail too. They're just trying to get you to transfer your domain to them.

Been getting their snail mailings as well (quite frequently too). The funny part of this is that with using registrars such as godaddy and domainsite you look at their pricing and almost do a double take. (as well as wonder which rocker they had fallen off of). Typically they are over charging $25+ pricing for a 1-year registration/renewal which is more then what the current registrar charges.

The whole scam is well just that a scam (guess they have been successful at it), I second the motion that these scum bag scammers need to get taken down.

I'd hate to see their BBB record.

I get countless mailings from these people. If only their envelopes were pre-paid, I'd mail them all back empty.

We should start legal action against them all together - we getting several faxes every month from this peoples asking to RENEW domain names where we listed as contact.

I remember one time last year our PO box was filled and then an additional cardboard box was filled with these scumbags mailings, and half of them were duplicates for the same domains. They must spend a fortune on postage fees and there seems to be very little intelligence in their mailing. Ughh.........

To be honest, i received 4 emails from them at one time in my mailbox at one time and got surprised that they are charging like networksolutions fee. Domain Registry Of America <- even their name surprised me like their a government registry :emlaugh:

I get quite a few regular mailings from them too.

I can see how someone without much knowledge could fall for it, especially how xplora said it sounds like a government agency.

of course i know their a not, but not for those people who never know how domains work. Plus, the mail was mentioned like they owned the domain and need the renewal fee  . This is really bad technique to steal business.

DON'T! A company I know of (that will remain nameless) was sued by DRoA for doing exactly that and DRoA acutally won.

There was some good news on that front early last year: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/01/06/court_bars_canadian_domain_slammer/. Interesting that a Canadian registrar calls itself the Domain Registry of AMERICA.

They also use different company names and different messages to try and do the same thing. I can't remember the other company names off the top of my head, but when you get notices from those other companies and trace the information you find that they have the same business address as DRoA.

They also call themselves the Domain Registry of Canada. I do warn my customers on my web page and in periodic newsletters about these people. They have modified what used to be phoney invoices in this country to state more clearly that the transaction is a transfer, but I think this was in response to a court order after I compalained loud and long to CIRA and others about deceptive business practices.
