Just wondering, lets say you want to cancel your hosting account with this host, but they have already charge you for the month, if you submitt your request to cancel at the beginning of the next billing cycle, does that mean that the customer should retain full functionality of the account till the end of the month? And the host should not suspend your account straight away and without notice nor aknowledgement of your cancellation request?

Yes, you should have access until the paid period is up.

However, too many horror stories of the account being deleted immediately.

My advice, move your site...get it working...then cancel, but still try to do it a week to 10 days before expiration to avoid an additional charge.

Thank you for the clarification. I send in a request to cancel my a/c with Gear Host, but they had already charge me for month of April ,so I send in a request to cancel my a/c with effect from the next billing cycle..whcih means that I should retain full functionality of the a/c till end of April since I am already been charged and its only 10th of April? But this morning, I find that my login has beeb conveniently disabled..(icontrol, ftp , ticket manager)...and I recieve no aknowledgement to my request to cancel, nor notice of my account suspension. What is this?!! I think this is really unprofessional and I am glad that I had already move my site to elsewhere before I cancel...still I am thinking if I should do a dispute with my cc company over this situation.

You got your site moved...I wouldn't dispute the remainder of the month you didn't really want completely anyway. However, do watch to make sure they don't charge you for any future month. They shouldn't, but sometimes it does happen, whether by accident or intentional.

Incognito > Thanks for advice.

I am just wondering does host companies get away with shortchanging the cutomers when they cancel, all the time? Isn't there a way to protect the customers from such unethical act? I am still seriously considering as to whether I should ask my CC company to take action against this.

I'm curious as to why you decided to cancel your gearhost service and how long you have spent with them. I have been with them since April 1st and have enjoyed the services (so far). If you "submitted your request to cancel at the beginning of the next billing cycle" as you say then it is only fair for them to bill you. What host did you choose instead of gearhost?

You are right, you have time untill next priod of course if you paid its fee...

However,be careful and move your files first then tell them cancellation.

Did you read the earlier post? I checked the billing details through icontrol and realised that they have already billed me for April, so I had no choice but to request the cancellation from the next billing cycle. If they have charged me for the month of April, today is only the 10th, I should retain full access of the services till end of the cotract month. But instead, they suspend my a/c without aknowledgement of recipt of the cancellation request nor notice of suspension. What is the meaning of this? I think I need to monitor closely my next credit card bill, and file a chargeback accordingly if they do still charge me for next month. But about having paid for the services for month of April, and not getting it, I think I will dispute this with my cc company. The improtant point is "They charged me for services and didn't deliver."

I have been with them since Jan 3rd 2002. I had my reasons for switching hosts, but I really do not want to spill it on the forum. If you want to know, please contact me through PM or email. Good Luck.

By the way, I still did not get a reply from Gear Host at all, regarding my request for cancellation nor about the account suspension. My cc was credited on 3.4.2002 for the month of April, that leaves me 3days to raise a dispute? I think I will do that if they do not response to me in the next 12 hrs. The dispute been they charged me for the services but they did not deliver the services.

Have you make an effort to call their office to try and resolve this problem personally. I don't see why Ryan would not be fair in dealing with you like he has with other people even when he has had no obligation to do so.

I do not reside in the states and its too expensive for me to call them. I don't see why such matters cannot be settle amicably and efficiently by e-mail, that you have to resort to calling them up. How long does it take to send an aknowledgement e-mail back? Obviously, they did recieve my cancellation request and had coviniently disabled my account without any notice nor explaination. I still did not hear anything from Gear Host..I think I will have to call the cc company tomorrow....Do I need to say more?

I feel a bit worry too, I ask for cancellation (email to billing department and open support tickets) since 5th April but they have no reply and take no action. And finally, after reading related posts in this forum, I email them again on 7th April, and on 8th April I can't login to iControl anymore, and my billing cycle starts on 9th April. I doubt if they will charge me another month using excuses they can possibly make up.......*sigh*

I've moved to a new host recently and *fully* satisfied. I think I'm really very stupid not moving away from gearhost earlier....

Liz,
I'll PM you with more details from Brooke otherwise you can contact her directly.

The deal is that your account was deleted since you requested your account to be cancelled. To be truthfully honest it looks like we messed up in that we did, yes, cancel the account but it looks like you explained later that you wanted to do this pending the months end, not now which threw us off. In your case your account was cancelled and then your months paid refunded. Please let me know what I can do to help otherwise contact Brooke.

In the future though as most thoughts agree you should always find yourself another host then cancel the account, it works better for you in the long run unless your host refuses to refund your money. In our case it's already been refunded.

Mellisa,
Please contact us or PM me on more details if you have had troubles via email, phone confirmation is always better since it is free.

Ryank,
its strange that you actually respond to a post on WHT forum, but you can ignore my many e-mails demanind a follow up on the cancellation status as well as reason for immdediate suspension of account. I await your PM.

But I need to clarify that I did not ask for immediate closure of account and then ask to be allow full acess till the end of the month. This is a copy of the e-mail I send on 2002.4.10 (note, its already 2002.4.12 on my side of the globe) to request for cancellation of account:

---------------------
"Hi
I would like to cancel my account with Gear Host. I just check the billing info, and note that Gear Host has already charged me for the month of April. Since Gear Host already charge me for
April, I would like to inform Gear Host that I would like to cancel my account at the end of this billing cycle. Please take note and do not charge me any further. I do believe that since I am already charged for month of April, I will retain access till the end of the month. Please advise.

My account details:

. Username - ***
· Password - ****
· Domain Name - **.net (none at the moment, actually)
· Last four digits of your credit card (xxxxxxxxxxxx****)

Thank you.
Best Regards
Liz

As you see, I make it clear that I should have full access of the account as I was billed or you guys should advise me on this. I would have appreicate it if some kind of notice was send to me prior the suspension of the account. But I never heard from you guys, account deletion is the only answer I get. I hate such messy situation, and hopefully this can be resolve amicably.

Ryank,
I finally recieved an e-mail from Brooke. Since the account is already deleted and the money refunded, please leave it as it is.

I think that though I am relatively new in using paid hosts, I have hang around this forum long enough to pick up some tips, I did move my site somewhere before I cancel my account, Thank you for your concern.

I will be monitoring my cc bill, hopefully everything will go smooth from now.

Liz,

Glad to hear that although your moving your getting set correctly, if you don't mind sharing with the board, why did you leave GearHost?

That email said it all. They were definitely in the wrong. Glad you could have this matter resolved.
