I'm going to apologize right now before I even get started. I know what I'm about to type isn't going to make sense, but please bare with me. I need all the help and feedback that I can get.

Ok, here's my situation: I have a new client that wants to "change" his servers that he has with one company over to me. The problem is is that the company that he current pays is a reseller for another company that provides the dedicated servers. I am told that he has 5 servers with this company, 3 of which are in a "special configuration" because of security and CC numbers and stuff.

My question to you, how do you think I should handle the transfer? Should I contact the reseller (they don't know he wants to switch yet)? Should I contact the company and inquire about the configuration to get more information? Should I become a reseller for that same company and request that the servers be changed to my name?

I've found the companies site and their prices are a little high. I've seen offers on here and other sites for lower than what they're charging, so the ideal solution would be for me to move them to a different provider, but I'm not sure how much of a headache its going to be transferring the "configuration" (whatever kind it is). My client is "smart", but he doesn't really understand why its in a configuration....he just knows its for keeping the CC numbers. I'm not sure that I could ask him to ask the reseller about the details of it without him totally being lost.

Any ideas or thoughts for me? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

OK...I might have lied above.

On an IP search from arin, if it only shows Verio as the owner of the IP, then its probably a dedicated through Verio, right?

:( This stuff is confusing. Been trying to dig through whois searches for some more information.

Of course it could just mean its at a Verio NOC...

The easiest solution to me seem to be to signup with the reseller.

Can you give any URL's? (for the "reseller" so we can have a sniff?)

Well, the reason why I thought they were reselling is because they had several "hops" in the IP and nameserver config stuff. Their clients (now my client) are hosted on the Verio IP.

The domain for one of the servers is reliabletech.com.

I looked through all kinds of WHOIS stuff and Verio is the only one that shows up. I just figured that Verio might be the provider because usually companies that have racks usually have blocks of IPs assigned to them, don't they?

Thanks for your help!

Why don't you just ask your client who thier host is?
