newbie alert ;)

I am getting swamped with techo babble, and I am totally and utterly lost !

Please someone explain in plain language what now ?
I go to godaddy.com and register a domain name. (is it really 8,95 a year, or are there hidden charges I missed ?). Tha´t simple. Say I have registered a www.host.com to make this question easier. www.host.com belongs to me. I can do whatever I want with that. But how ???
I have some space given to me by my cable internet provider. It would be fun to point www.host.com to that space at my local provider. But how ???

Is it al all possible to have www.host.com end up at http://httpd.chello.nl/n.vanwilligenburg/ without using some cloaking trick ? (like .to or .tk) ? Because forwarding is not really what I am looking for.

If I ask anywere else I get techno talk about DNS's (I figured out those are domain name servers). I am with chello( .nl ). The worst cable provider on earth, and they do not respond at all to my questions. How do I figure out my (the ?) DNS names I need ? They seem to carry ns01.chello.nl, ns02.chello.nl, ns1.upc.nl, ns2.upc.nl, arnhem.telekabel.nl, ns1.a2000.nl, ns2.a2000.nl, or do I need them all ? Than what ? Do I mail godaddy with these DNS things, and they figure it out ? Guess not :bawling:

After I have figured out how to point the www.host.com to http://httpd.chello.nl/n.vanwilligenburg/ maybe I could try to get some more space... Small steps might get me there ...

I dont think that is possible.. The only thing I think you might be able to do if godaddy will let you.. (which) they probably wont is put a redirect in the parked page.. If not I am sure a host will sell you a small space for VERY cheap.. I would say your best bet would be to call your cable provider and ask them if you can point your domain to there server and to your space.. I guess thats about as simple as I can put it.. Good luck...

So that means I can not get a domain without accompanying webspace ?

Visit www.mydomain.com - A Free service that allows you to accomplish what you desire above. You have to change the DNS servers assigned to your Domain Name with the Registrar and make sure that they point to ns1.mydomain.com etc...

This can be compared to what v3 does (come.to go.to, etc ) ? It is just a simple forwardcer, and my visitors will be swarmed with popups and other peoples adverst...

First of all, you'd register "host.com," not "www.host.com." Yes, it's really only $8.95 per year. :) DNS servers control what IP address a host name resolves to, among other things. "http://httpd.chello.nl/n.vanwilligenburg/" is not an IP address. That's a URL, so you HAVE to use URL forwarding or cloaking if you want your domain name to go there. You can't just use any DNS server. You have to use a DNS server that's authoritive for your domain name. Oops, techno babble, sorry. You have to use a DNS server that has information about your domain name. Chances are, unless your cable provider offers web hosting, which they might for an additional fee, they're not going to add your domain name to their DNS servers. Not only that, but they'd also have to add your domain name to their web server for your domain name to work. They're not going to do that for free. What you want is real hosting. With real hosting, the hosting provider adds your domain name to their DNS and web servers, and you just login to GoDaddy and set the DNS servers for your domain to the hosting provider's DNS servers. If you don't want to pay for real hosting, then you'll have to run your own DNS and web servers, which doesn't sound like something you'd want to do right now.

I recommend URL forwarding in your situation. You can use a free service like zoneedit.com or mydomain.com. They offer full control over your domain name, basically like running your own DNS server but really using theirs instead, as well as URL and e-mail forwarding.
