View Full Version : What data center?
dektong 04-08-2002, 06:51 PM I have gotten very aggresive pricing on these people and will probably sign up a contract within 3-5 days.
Everything being equal, what data center will you chooe to put your server at? Pick your option and if you want to, explain it if you care. In case you choose somewhere else, let me know the reason(s).
Oh in case you are wonderring, both UUNet and Level3 give 100% uptime guarantee whereas InterNAP gives 99.999% uptime guarantee
cheers,
dektong 04-08-2002, 07:15 PM If anybody has a direct/indirect experience with the above data center (meaning, you have rack(s) at their data center or you are with somebody that deal directly with them) I would love to hear it.
cheers,
dektong 04-08-2002, 07:55 PM hm ... now I really want to know the reasons why people chose what they did :)
Why not InterNAP? I thought they are pretty ncie too
cheers,
BiGWill 04-08-2002, 08:40 PM i'd just prefer level3 as their network seems to be really nice (some colleagues are colo'ing with them here in Frankfurt/Germany and they are very pleased about the speed and stability), and simply because they don't seem to have a router in every little town, where it's adding more, and more hops on the way to the "target" as seen on the UUnet backbone ...
but the best one i think is Abovenet, or whoelse does post so many facts and detailed status about their network on the web, which is avaible for everyone!!!
http://www.mfn.com/network/ip_networkstatus.shtm
it's really interesting watching their network from time to time ;-)
anyway ... good luck with your decision.

dektong 04-08-2002, 08:55 PM In that case, you hould choose for "Somewhere Else" :)
I also love above/mfn too ... but recently I heard they are in a very serious financial problem ....
cheers,

bobkat 04-10-2002, 05:49 PM Level 3 Cheap but they suck...
UUnet WAY TO EXPENSIVE and they treat cusotmers like SH _ _!
All the big guys have serious financial problems; way over built their space. Guess it takes a rocket scientist to figure out that in technology there is ONE certainty. Power always continues to increase and the footprint ( Server size in this case ) required to hold that power ALWAYS shrinks.
I prefer small ( 5-10K feet is plenty) with an abundance of major backbone inter-connects.
Of course this require that they be located in a Telcom Towers type facility that allows this to occur. Anytime you have a colo company paying transport charges or are looking at any of the big guys there are:
1) To many people in the mix to pass the buck to – Peering Points – Local Loop transport carriers etc…
2) To expensive per meg or their losing money – YOU CAN BANK ON THAT – which makes your deployment much risker than it needs to be.
3) Tech Support comes and goes and won’t know you and your little platform from ADAM.
The only way to provide world-class infrastructure is to find that kind of company. In Atlanta I know of one…
Also dektong we have spoken before, wish you the best of luck, but you get what you pay for in this world. Another certainty!
TRhats the truth, and as always - BUYER BEWARE
BobKat
I like internap because they connect to all major backbones and choose the fastest path. Also remember what guarantees are. They will pay you a few bucks if their uptime goes below their guaranteed uptime. A guarantee doesnt mean they will have 100% uptime, they may in fact have less than a backbone that guarantees 99.9999% uptime (still a lot of uptime). It's all about the money, a guarantee isn't an assurance that something will be up what it is guaranteed to be up.

When did we speak before? I did not recall ...
Thanks for your input.
Now.... how about Above/MFN? Yea ... they are in deep financial trouble now, but any experience with them?
cheers,

BTW, why is Level3 suck? I thought they are pretty impressive.
And, are you a direct customer of UUNet/WorldCom?

Level3 really doesnt suck, but they have never turned a profit, meaning that if someday, investors get tired of not getting a return, they could pull their funding and that basically mean the end of Level3.
Although, today I just saw that WorldCom Corp just lost $1.00 off the stock price, which has the been trend since 2 weeks ago. Not looking very good for WorldCom.
Good Luck!

netfido 04-13-2002, 12:41 AM In Los Angeles InterNap is actually in Level 3. So if you colo'd there your cabinet would actually be a Level3 cabinet being sold to you by InterNAP for less $$.
FYI: The average response time for someone to get to your ticket at the LA Level3 gateway is 4 hours. I'm not kidding.
I'd recommend InterNAP. I have worked with them and find the support and bandwidth excellent.
