View Full Version : Looking to Build an Elite Team
OwenCK 04-08-2002, 03:08 PM I am looking to building a small elite staff team for a hosting company recently setup, which is in a stable state. Anyone thats interest must be between the age of 14-20yrs, and must have experience with servers, customer support, and *nix.
SoftWareRevue 04-08-2002, 03:13 PM I'm appalled that you wouldn't consider hiring me because I'm over twenty. :bawling:
I doubt if your advertisement for employees with the current age restrictions is legal.
OwenCK 04-08-2002, 03:18 PM Well the age is really a requirment or anything just domething I would "prefere".
dreamdezign 04-08-2002, 03:26 PM we can work for you or i can i am 21

Actually, according to U.S. law you can start working at the age of 14 so his request is perfectly legal. I can understand where he's coming from since many teenagers can easily surpass adult "professionals" in terms of skills and creativity. I personally know a 15-year old running his own sucessful webhosting biz.
SoftWareRevue 04-08-2002, 05:27 PM Actually, I was referencing the part that says "between 14-20."
He could say (maybe) that he would *prefer* someone between those ages. But I don't believe age specific is allowed.
AnimeHost 04-08-2002, 05:34 PM Thanks for clearing that up. I would have to agree with you on that.

There are limitations to that. You cannot work full-time and more...
AnimeHost 04-08-2002, 05:36 PM I'm aware of the limitations. You are only allowed to work for minimal wage, but you can work full time as long as it doesn't interfere with school or effect your grades.

I started working last year (age 14) and I started out making $6.35/hour which is way over minimal wage.

But, I'm afraid this is getting this thread a wee bit much OT.
Apologies to the original poster.
exbabylon 04-08-2002, 08:55 PM I'm 15, does that put me in range? Also how about some more detailed information on this job offer, pay, by hour/salary, experience needed, location, etc.

Yeh I meant prefere, or it would really be Age Discrimination there, I prefere teenage people, because they can be just as knowledgable as adults and are dedicated for looking for experience. Anywho I forgot to add that this is merly a part-time job, which would pay by the ammount of work done and not by the hour. Good idea for people seeking experience. For more information please PM or E-Mail me, like many of you have done already, thankyou for your interests.
exbabylon 04-08-2002, 09:16 PM My email sent...

Yeh I meant prefere, or it would really be Age Discrimination thereNot at all a better choice of words; you can't give preference based on age. Actually, age discrimination (or discrimination against any protected class) doesn't depend at all on what you say; all that matters is what you do.
What you say, of course, could become evidence if a case is brought against you. In that situation, whether you said "prefer" or "must be" wouldn't make much difference -- if it were proven that your hiring decision was based on age you could be found to be in violation. In this case you've essentially said that you intend to discriminate.
Not that anything's likely to come of it, it's just not the kind of statement you want to make in public (at least in the US; I guess you might be in the UK and I don't know what the related laws there might be).
SicChild 04-09-2002, 07:23 PM Umm, I Canada I know you can't ask someone how old they are. If you do ask them, they can bring it up with the Employment Board or whatever and they'll look into it. Not sure what they can do though. There are ways of getting around "How old are you?", for instance they can ask what method of transportation will you be takin got work.
Anywho, this thread is far off topic. heh
