View Full Version : Gearhost - iControl?? Time's up !!

Ok... here;s the facts... it's officially a new week and iControl... "the great white hope"... is still not fully functional... I will insist that this thread has nothing to do with Ryan and his previous issues... i have an issue with how GearHost is conducting themselves with false promises.... WHY do they allow RYAN to predict the date/week of a product release when they know that it aint ready yet... all I ask is to stop "Predicting"...

here's what has been done so far:

04-03-2002: Billing Module
The updated Billing Module has been installed. While there is still some remaining functionality it provides more than the previous version.

04-01-2002: SSL Module
Your new SSL Module has been installed. To access your shared SSL certificate enable it under Web Server.

04-01-2002: iControl v2.0
During this whole week we will be implementing iControl v2.0. Notifications of the upgrade process will be done through email in addition to here.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

There was supposed to be a release every day ?... Here's what's been quoted by RYAN... and you'll see the pattern... but I honestly think GearHost needs another spokesperson....

"The iControl v2 upgrade is a WEEK long process all happening this week (again, as mentioned in our multiple emails), we've already released 1 module and will be releasing 2 additional modules tonight with others coming every few hours all this week.
"

"The two modules are installed and a few more coming tonight as well.... The modules, although installed are hidden from clients right now, pending some final QA but their in iControl just hidden a bit ."

"Don't worry shibby there just around the corner and closer "

plus a whole heap of... coming soon!!

Please note... i am still a customer and I will stay a customer because my needs aren't much and cuz I am a seasoned person.... 5 years... 7 hosts... to me, iControl is just another tool for stats and a couple other things.... i can afford to D/L my log files...

I just think GEARHOST needs a MANAGEMENT change... the company is definetly trying but they are rustling too many feathers with broken promises and the lack of updates on the status of this iControl tool that soo many other ppl are relying on...

but i firmly believe in "you get what you pay for"... dont' even hold your breath for the UNIX boxes... they said that they will do a "TEST PILOT" and work out any security breaches on non-important accounts... and then release it... "3-years preparing"... yeah right...

Where are all the gearhost supporters now... actually, I am one of them... but they have to check themselves and re-evaluate this whole iControl crap.... why not beta test it and give us something else... ok... i'm done... too tired... you guyz expand...

Spiceman,

First off our time is not up, it's 10:30 tonight and we will be releasing the final upgrades to iControl, we have been releasing enhancements as well as bug fixes all this past week now tonight you'll see some additional changes to the higher prices (only for new customers), database automation for SQL 2000 Server, database automation for MySQL, etc. Either case, if your a customer you'll notice the changes shortly. Be a bit patient as this takes time, we've been coding very hard the past four weeks, it's not something that comes over night.

what about the bandwidth and stats? :)

/me really really wants that

Well its lookin pretty good anyway.. nice work

Anyway..
let me overview the email and cross compare... and hopefully ryan can reply and just fill in the blanks

o Site Stats by LiveStats - Not Done, as far as I can tell
o SSL Automation - Done
o Online Billing and CC information - Done
o Encrypted Login - Done
o Bandwidth Management - Not Done, as far as I can tell
o Multiple interface changes and enhancements - Done or Part done
o Beta Team Opt-In - Not sure on what this is ?

I can understand delays and that things do not come overnight, because I am one who says things will be done and they never are, I like things to be perfect and even If i promise a date, I wouldn't release crap, and I am sure this is the case with gearhost, maybe a last minute bug or something but I am sure they have all good intentions.

Ok... let's refer to your above qoute... and this is what i PM'd Ryan about... I too believe in releasing a SOLD, FUNCTIONAL product.... but this is not a school project that only affects yourself... it involves paying clients... i work as a consultant and I am aware of not meeting project deadlines... but in the CORPORATE/PROFESSIONAL world... YOU MUST keep the client abreast of what you are doing... but not all the details ;) - just let them know that such and such release is delayed cuz of "XYZ"

People just want is a little note to say that there is a delay and we are applying patches... instead of me checking everyday for changes... and getting an explanation after i post here... they could've put it in the same place where they had the first set of updates...

Billabong2k2.... i hope you see my issue here...

I get your point, and I agree with you spiceman, dont get me wrong or anything. I just also know where ryan is coming from too, as I have delayed my website numerous times and my news script program, but then again no one is paying me so it really doesnt matter :D

Billabong,
I'll PM you on the finals but new pricing as well as stats are coming tomorrow morning (we're really pushing for today but don't quote me on that ;)) and all of it will be fully automated, it will be a huge push since the stats have been what most are waiting on.

Spiceman,
I totally see your point and appreciate your input, it is important to ensure our release dates and yet while I think no good software product has been released on time it that should of been an internal milestone not one missed to the public, if you get my point.

Well the good news we finally have stats as of 4/10/02....you have to pay $10 per domain (one time fee) to activate it for each domain you have. Here is a demo of their stats. The images sometimes flicker when I scroll up and down but overall it's got a lot of information.

Livestats 6.2
http://livestats.deepmetrix.com/stats?type=login&action=login&serverid=deepmetrix&username=guest

Here is a better free stats that Aplus.net uses which I prefer

Webalizer
http://www.mrunix.net/webalizer/

Overall there has been a lot added to the service within 10 days time.

Correct Aaron the stats are enabled. We will be fully automating some additional features (i.e. Bandwidth, etc) this week as well. The LiveStats module is quick and painless, for $10 you get lifetime stats and better, more accurate reporting with LiveStats (costs us thousands of dollars with our license pool) than you would with Webalizer (free). All in all it's a better deal for your money. Glad to hear that upgrades are going well.

I think you should add maybe 6 bucks to everybody's yearly price, just 50 cents a month, and include stats in everybody's package. Anybody agree?

This wouldn't be reasonable since we paid thousands of dollars for our large amount of licenses, this stuff isn't free, it's high tech web analytics software, not simple like webalyzer. The charge is not recurring but rather just a setup fee. One-time cost for this type of stats isn't bad.

Either case your suggested solution was to just raise the price so in either case (raise price/charge setup) it's really just a means to an end.
