Hi!
I know I heard something about some top-level-domains beeing free, but I can't remember which one it was - some island somewhere...
Have I completely lost my mind, or is there some truth to this?

A quick perusal of their TOS shows that they reserve the right to spam you and to sell your details to third parties (that is, spammers).
They also can change the terms of the agreement at any time. I guess that means that if you've got a killer name, and they decide that they can make some money off of it, they can just take it from you.
Also, the usage of the name is very limited. It's basically just a URL redirection.
After my experience with Namezero, a free domain costs more than a real paid-for domain.
My recommendation... If you really don't have the money, but you REALLY want a domain name, just buy one from a sub 9 registrar. There are several that have very good service. The free offer just isn't worth the money (the money that you'll have to end up forking over later).
