Hi,
I'm looking to get involved in something. Here's the short end of it (and then the long end after :-). I'm looking for job, situation, project, or whatever, to work as a contractor doing systems administration, support (live, ticket, email, phone), programming (scripts, client/server apps, etc.), security/auditing, and other similar work. I'm not in need of money, but have some hobbies that are expensive that I wish to support, and find I have a lot of free time each day doing these things anyway (so, hence this post). I may as well get paid for it and not have to explain to my wife why I want to drop a few grand a month on gear or feel bad about doing it. So it's just easier to say "this job/position is specifically for this purpose" and that's my motivation (for now).
My resume is long and I'll be more than happy to provide it, if you have any interest. I'm probably looking for part time work only, but who knows? I just don't want to be tied up all day every work day, and if I was looking for a regular full time job 40+ hours a week that was insanely fast paced and non stop, I'd still be there. So, if it'll be something _that_ involved, it would have to be something very special. I have a lot of experience with Linux based servers, especially one's using Cpanel (no control panel is fine as well), among non Cpanel. Everything from Apache, DNS (BInd and tinydns), POP/SMTP (Exim, Qmail, vpopmail), PHP, Perl, kernel (compiles, updates and patches) from source and RPM, to MySQL, FTP, SSL, SSH, firewalls/iptables, Cpanel/WHM and more.
I've written custom frontends, modules and extensions for Cpanel even, server/admin scripts, custom wrappers, mods for Apache's source for specific security reasons, custom services for server-to-server communication (client and server applications both--also to work with Cpanel and behind the scenes, too) to run securely and bypass some weaker or error prone services (or Cpanel services, too), and so on. I've done everything from basic HTML and script setups, to coding full on services and GUI's, to technical reviews and edits of books for O'Reilly publishing for Linux, Perl, security, related books.
I'm very experienced with shell, CGI, modules for Apache and PHP, Perl, etc. and, well, you name it. I've wrote scripts, services, auditing, monitoring and resource checking scripts, and too much more to list here. Basically, I've done pretty much everything there is to do on a support, admin, and programming level for web hosts and developed new interfaces and services, security, etc. (but of course, there's always more and other languages). I'm just trying not to list off every application, service, protocol, tool, command, etc., but you can bet I've used them all extensively. There are some languages I don't like or prefer, and some operating systems I don't wish to use/work on (i.e., Windows and MAC), but I am well rounded (no one knows everything).
The last two web hosts that are well know that I've previously worked for, are JaguarPC (for over a year or two--I don't remember exactly how long) which I left, and then shortly after started working for Site5, which I recently left after over 3 years. I was the Sr. Systems administrator at both companies, and my duties and tasks were very broad. I also served as lead developer and sys admin at the previous companies I was with before that (I can list them if you are interested). Both the companies mentioned above are great, and I've only mentioned I left in this post here and now, to answer inquiries about why I'm no longer with them before anyone assumes the wrong reasons (I left to pursue my own interests, was all there is to it).
That said, I still am doing my own thing, but find that I'm basically bored a lot of the day. I'm not too busy, if at all, and I find I am eager to get back into some work or some situation. I'm not looking to kill myself doing 100 different things or any major, really involved projects, nor do I want to be on call 24/7 or work weekends. I would like a regular shift in between the hours of 6 AM to 6 PM PDT sometime, Monday through Friday. I am committed and work fast and effectively, don't misunderstand me, I just don't want to lose sleep because I'm the only guy around that can fix issues. To be clear, I also don't want to get some low paying support monkey job to answer just basic questions and not do anything else. I'd like to hook up with a company that knows what they want, how they want to accomplish it or can decide on these things and commit to them (i.e., no shifting staff around all the time or having them do every type of thing there is to do on short notices--a company that assigns staff to specific positions they are best suited for).
Basically, this all comes down to me wanting to support some of my expensive hobbies (muscle cars, music/recording gear, etc.) without digging into savings, the bank account or investments or using my current earnings (none of that is going to happen). That's to say, I don't need to feel bad about spending money on things I don't really need (because I don't, I have to be honest), or have to justify it to my wife either. :-) Don't take that as meaning I wouldn't take the job seriously like my livelihood depended on it. I'm simply saying that unless I got a really special or interesting offer, I'm not looking to kill myself working 16 hour days like I'm used to doing (I am trying to stop that) or commit to something really big, partner up or anything else--again, unless it's something interesting that will pay off, and pay in the meantime. I know I'm being vague, but it really depends on what someone might offer and how much it'll interest me and them.
So, unless something happens where I get into a nice/interesting situation, it would just be a little extra side project/job, most likely, but not one that is only hit and miss of random, little jobs/tasks where I'm called on once a week or less and only make a couple hundred dollars a month. Part time (20 hours or so a week (maybe less)) is fine, provided it's a decent wage. Basically, I'm interested in some business relationship with an established company that can use my skills and I can do interesting things and support my hobbies with. I'm not looking to work for extremely cheap wages, but I'm not going to demand top dollar either. I'm putting this out there, to see who has an offer I would like to get involved in, and speak about it further to see if we can work something out and get something going. So, do you have anything of potential interest? Anything at all? Contact me and let's chat about it!
Eventually, I'll probably just be offering my own web hosting and some various software that should make me plenty of money in a quite serious business I'll start, but perhaps something else will happen in the meantime, or I can at least provide a service to someone or get involved in something that will make us both happy until that happens (or unless something else happens to postpone or supplant it). If you have any need or interest in a project or a position that you might have open where you can use my skills, please feel free to inquire. I'm willing to sign all the expected contract and NDA agreements, etc. I've been in the web hosting and sys admin field for over a decade and a member of WHT for over 5 years (this includes my old handle). I have many references and a long resume (that direly needs updating). I'm over 18 and live in the USA (California). I'm willing to discuss anything of interest that's worth discussing. Maybe someone to fund a project or business, even, who knows, I'm very open to suggestions, offers and discussions.
Again, I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking for, but I'm a little bored and finding since I do this all day anyway, I may as well make a little extra money and justify buying some more toys while I'm at it and do something interesting. Who knows, maybe it'll turn into something interesting and worth while for both of us. Feel free to Email or PM me, or catch me on AIM (all available on my profile links). I'm perfectly willing to speak more in-depth about what I can offer, if you feel I'm suited for your project, position, job, investment idea/funding, or just the regular stuff. Don't assume your offer might not interest me, in case you have any doubt. Please definitely contact me (email tim@chatbase.com, PM me here, catch me on AIM: Linux Soup, or contact me and give me your number or I'll give you mine). If nothing comes of this, it's no issue for me. I'll probably end up doing something, getting something off the ground or posting something more interesting about a specific business idea or project people should find interesting. We'll see, thanks for your time!
Yes, I realize I made a few typo's, it's late. :-) Also, I realize this post is sort of weird to some people, when they usually see a quick post about the position someone is qualified or looking for and the general stuff, but I'm open to and able to do so many things and I'm also not sure what I am looking for yet--the offers could vary greatly. I realize, too, that there was no need to "explain" or outline in detail the reasons, but I am just thinking out loud and wanted to explain how I'm open and that it's not the usual job request (I know how strange that sounds, too). :-)
