Hello, every body,
I have a website www.share2.com for hosting shareware. Now I need to transfer my website to a dedicated server. Please give me some advices for a dedicated server for me, thank you all very much.

1, I am not in the USA but my visitors are almost 80% from the USA. So the server must be in the US or CA and the support should be good and low price(free the best).

2, I do not know Linux or FreeBSD but I also do not choose Windows for its expensive license.

3, The setup fee should be low(free the best).

4, Monthly tranfer is higher than 100GB.

5, Monthly fee is lower than $300.00.

6, I want to purchase plan-B from http://tera-byte.com/ded.html
But I do not know if it's a good one.

Best Regards,
Kim

tera-byte is a reputable company, and going with them could be a good choice.

www.rackshack.net offers excellent prices, but if you want good support and service, they are a bad choice.

I am currently on a dedicated server with www.digitalprinceton.net . I recommend them; the service is excellent, the tech support is quick to reply and extremely helpful, and the prices are reasonable. They also have some of the bst bandwidth providers around.

Tera-byte's plan B supposes that you pay $2.50 for every GB plus $100 server rental fee. So if you intend to use more than 100 GB this will cost you more than $350/mo.

if it's just for one site, then try a raq4 or something. quite easy to administer / setup / update.

i say go with rackshack all the way if you're tech savvy enough and pick up things fast. i knew nothing about linux or dedicated boxes 6 months ago and learned all i needed from the raq forum here on wht and the forums at rackshack. i'm running 2 sites, one static and very small and 1 dynamic database driven site(about 50gb per month with over 5000 users, not on all at once mind you) on a raq4i with 512mb ram. it's running fine (except for the recent webalizer mess with the new cobalt updates)..

but yeah, 400gb bandwidth per month for $99 + $99 setup (if you're fast and lucky enough to get them before they sellout. and not from australia)...... not that bad.

Thanks to WoodShedd, qqqwww and skylab,

Now, I find another service from www.rackspace.com
They say their dedicated servers managed. If this means they will provide support to me for free, I will choose them. And the price is very attractive at the first glimpse. The monthly fee is $195.00 with the following configurations,
RedHat Linux 7.1
AMD 650 Mhz
128 M RAM
20GB EIDE
30 GB BandWidth (100GB - Add $189.00, 150GB - Add $318, ...)
And more other billable software or upgrades.

I like this very much and I think they must have a very good support team from their website's description and FAQs.
I talked with one of their sales, but the pricing he gives me includes a One Time Install Fee($231.20), I can not find it any where from their website.

I will choose one from tera-byte.com or rackspace.com,
1, Their prices are both very attractive and affordable
2, Their monthly data transfer are flexible to use.
3, It seems that both of them are reputable company with good support.
4, RackSpace call their service "managed" and their have a very clear FAQs on their website and what's more, they call their service 99.999% uptime guarantee, all these are very attractive to me. While it seems that tera-byte provides only billable support, but tera-byte is more trustable to me.

If you, which one you will choose? rackspace or tera-byte or other?

Thank you very much :)

actually if you haven't gotten a server already go with rackspace they have a super deal this month only $12 for setup fee and even a 12% off the price of the $195 you mentioned. They're worth going for just that you may need to add a tape backup on that price (if you have data that comes from the internet/database).

i sent you an email and PM earlier. be sure to check that when you have a chance.

but out of the two, i'd recommend rackspace, if you don't mind spending the extra money.

hi skylab, why do most people choose rackspace over other providers? is it because of faster network, customer suport, etc? i'm rather tempted to try them out but would like to hear from people who have experience working with them before.

Thanks in advance :)

well, i personally have no experience with rackspace. however, i know 2 people personally who have servers with them running mission critical sites that are more than extremely happy with them.

their network is outrageous and fast (and i'm in europe), their support reputation is good from what i've read and heard.

now, their prices, eh, i'm more of a value man myself. but, yeah, from everything i've read and heard, you just can't beat their managed servers. if you need managed help, reliability, uptime, speed, and can afford them.

and on the flip-side, i hear many great things about tera-byte's great network, support, or service. i have considered tera-byte in the past.

but personally, if i had the money/choice i would go with rackspace. personally.

whew. heheheh...

Hi, SkyLab,
Thank you very much!
I have checked my E-Mail and read your message. Thank you again.

Untill now, I trend to choose either rackspace or tera-byte for their good reputation. The money is an important factor but not all, isn't it?

One of the above friends metioned their one time setup fee decreased to $12.00 and %12 off the monthly fee, I have consulted one of their sales man, while he/she does not answer my question about this but give me a pricing of

$269.00 - Monthly Recurring Fee
$231.20 - One Time Install Fee

Another Sales Man give me a pricing of

$259.00 - Monthly Recurring Fee
$221.20 - One Time Install Fee

It seems that the One Time Install Fee could not be cut off.

Hi,

Sorry to give you one more choice, but try FocalHosting.. their network is non-cogent, multihomed and outstanding - and their support is just amazing !

Every time I screw up my FreeBSD server , Alex comes to the rescue and fixes everything for me.

I have never experienced such personalized, responsive and totally incredible support

All the best and keep us posted

Look at the Webhosting Special Offers forum, you will find interesting deals if you look for a dedicated server. For a managed one, well, there are less oportunities....

You honestly can't go wrong with Rackspace, especially if you like their prices. My time with them has been nothing but an absolute pleasure. Extremely fast and stable network, fabulous support (they even called me 11 PM on a Friday to update me on a problem I had), and great server quality.

Just do a search for Rackspace on this forum...I don't believe any other company can match their record here.

SplashHost: I'd agree fully on Affordableservers' network speed and uptime. We have a server with them and the network is simply blazingly fast :) not to mention good support

GeorgeC & skylab: Thanks for the info on rackspace, will be contacting them very soon.

There's truly no other choice. It's a shame too, cos I only wish I could get this type of service for a cheaper price. One GREAT thing about having my server at rackspace is I know I'll never have to find another host again.

Interesting...

Is http://www.affordableservers.net/ associated with Spectrum at all? I notice on the front of the Affordable site they have images of these Spectrum servers:

http://www.online-spectrum.com/rack_sys/r100series.htm

...yet on the Affordable site I can only find RaQ and Supermicro boxes. I ask because I'm planning to buy a Spectrum 110 box and hopefully set it up at http://www.wholesalecolo.com (http://www.wholesalecolo.com/special1.html) on their $89 per month special (including 540GB of transfer!) or possibly set up a few (to resell) and take their 1/4 rack special.

Any thoughts?

Steve

Were not affiliated with them in anyway, we were using them i believe then we switched to supermicro servers as they offer unmatched reliability, speed, and quality. As soon as my designers get caught up ill be having them give affordableservers.net and affordablecolo.com a overhaul... Have a great day.

Refer to http://www.rackspace.com/promo/12promo.php

I have ordered and received their professional Linux box for $171.60/month and $12 setup.

NB. You have to signup for a 12 month contract, paid monthly however :)

Will you do me a favor and click on my website link & let me know how fast that is for you over there in europe.

Thanks

Leat,

That is fast

When will you have your full site up? And did you have a dedicated server with someone else before rackspace?

My plan is to have it up and running next week with about 100 domains. The main site, http://webbhotell.etableraweb.com/ will be upp earlier, maybe during the weekend.

I have had dedicated with InsideCrew and WeinBar, have one with Burst now.

tell them I'm going to sign for 12 month contract so I want the $12 setup fee and 12% off the price. I think you have to sign a contract with them to get that deal. I am with rackspace, the new deals are amazing I've been with them for 2 years now, my server 2 years ago bottom end compared to the bottom end servers that they have now are amazing. They still offer the support the first year they were even above excellent support and even after the downsizing (internet crash) they're still offering excellent support and also willing to bargain if you show them a competitor website. Ever since the internet crash last year they slashed prices in half. Even on Sunday at 3am in the morning there is always a technical guy at the other end who can help get your server back up and running if it has any problems. If you want to install custom programs too and don't know or don't want to screw anything up, you can even pay them to do it for you to. But the basic stuff is free if you have problems ie running out of space or system crash or want mysql installed or want more domains added they don't charge for that.

I have a dedicated server with weinbar right now.

matrix, it's fairly good. it loads faster than most sites in the US do. not as fast as the previous site, i'll try and post a traceroute here in a few minutes.

Never felt I could trust the support if something really bad would happen. As I understand they now have been acquired, maybe the situation has improved, I dont know.

Wrong - I've been with RS for some 7 months now. Their support is great, providing that you either stick to using the Control Panels as is (Plesk or Ensim) or that you know Linux.
