View Full Version : Watch out from GoDaddy transfers

We have recently acquired couple of domains from a GoDaddy account. So to transfer the domains smoothly, we opened a GoDaddy account and the owner pushed the domains to us.

That was a week ago, we now wanted to transfer these domains to our own eNOM account. We sent the transfer request, but GoDaddy rejected it saying:

"The domain registrant has recently changed. For security purposes, it may not be transferred for 60 days."

I called GoDaddy on the phone, and they first claimed it is ICANN policy. so I went to ICANN website and read to them the ICANN policy regarding domain transfer on:

http://www.icann.org/transfers/policy-12jul04.htm

Section (3)

It states no where that a registrar can hold a domain due to change of registrant information. I also asked them if that is a security concern, why not contact the original owner who pushed the domain to us and confirm the transfer.

Their reply was silence and then they directed me to their user agreement page.

We complained to change@godaddy.com who also refused to release these domain names. The domains are due to expire soon, so clearly GoDaddy is trying to make a quick buck forcing new customers to stay with them.

I also filed a complaint with ICANN about this and will pursue it further if i can.

So watch out from GoDaddy when moving domains there, they are the worst domain registrar I had to deal with!

GoDaddy has a policy regarding pushing domain names. After the push there is 60 days lock on it and it can not be transferred away to another Registrar. Seems like you have no option, other than to renew the domain name.

Yes, GoDaddy has a self-induced 60 day rule which is why it stinks to buy a domain from someone who has it at GoDaddy. I usually just transfer it away and have the previous owner approve the transfer request.

Go Daddy's thinking, "Gotcha!"

Blech.

Anyway, I sincerely doubt you'll be able to get anything out of it.
Go Daddy has surely reviewed that with ICANN prior to enforcing
it, and your checking the box beside the "I have read the service
agreement and agree to its terms" prior to transfer binds you to
it.

Just renew the domains with them for now, then transfer it out 45
days after their last renewal (http://www.icann.org/announcements/advisory-06jun02.htm).

tamouh: thats how you should done it not internal transfer.

enom has 7 days lock too for internal pushing, not sure if that works for registrar transfers too or not.

To update on this case, I've filed the complaint with ICANN and they actually forwarded my complaint to GoDaddy. A peson from their management team contacted me via email and explained that was an error and she released some of the domains !

So as I thought, the ICANN rules hold true and no registrar is allowed to hold your domain for any period of time unless they have a reason for it specified by the ICANN rules I stated above.

I'm glad this was sorted out though....
