Hi Everyone...

Need some advice.. Our current server monitoring software is pretty good, but its a bit limited. I'm looking for something new that will give real time status in a HTML output so clients can view it on our website. There is only a few requirements...

1. Will monitor and report on multiple servers
2. SMS and E-mail alerts
3. Real time stats via an HTML output

I appreciate any suggestions or advice anyone can give :)

For a Paid Option - look at GFi's product line. www.gfi.com

Best choice will be nagios. Install nagios and provide seperate logins for each clients. Upon entering the login details they will be able to see their servers onlyand privileged (master user) can see all the server details.

OPManager http://manageengine.adventnet.com/products/opmanager/index.html

great software, and it's free up to 10 servers.

I'll second that recomendation for Nagios. It's UNIX based, and the installation can be a little tricky, but it's well worth it and it will take care of the things you want. There's an article in the latest Ping!Zine about setting up Nagios that may be of interest to you.

They're working on a new system which will introduce even more features.

Nagios is certainly the gold standard in the open source realm. If you can afford commercial solutions, a company call GroundWork Open Source Solutions, provides a commercial product based on Nagios.

AdventNet OpManager is great, too and the free edition which includes up to 10 servers is a nice way to try it out. Hybodus is also a good choice and it used to be a bargain, but they recently raised the price so the professional edition now costs about the same as OpManager. Both of these products include HTML reports.

Does Nagios provide individual login access for clients to view the uptime stats for their "shared" hosted websites on a single server? For exmaple if one has 100 clients on a dedicated server, is it possible for each of the user (individually) be able to login and see the stats ???

Nagios does not do that out of the box. You would have to hire someone to modify it heavily for that to happen or look for a plugin for it and modify it.

From viewing the stats point of view, it is not possible with Nagios with the standard installation (unless heavily customised by someone as explained by MH-Gary.

But you can configure email notifications for individual cleints, so that if their server is down, that particular client will receive an email.

I recommend IPCheck. It has a # of features that these other monitoring tools don't provide. For example, it can check the mailserver by sending/retrieving sample email, it can check the DB servers by running queries.. it can check whether websites are actually loading properly and whether they are loading slowly. It can also check various SNMP-based parameters (such as CPU, RAM, network, etc).

It creates live HTML reports and is very accurate. I love it because it has a Windows GUI client which gives us instant alerts on any issues.
