Someone asked me the other day......what precautions does your host provider take to protect your account from a denial of service attack?

I gave a very blank response in return.

What would be an intelligent request to ask or to expect from a host provider?

Good question. Its tough to develop a strategy. Some
providers will employ firewalls, others will rely on their
switches and routers to do the trick, and some will count
on built-in protection from the server operating system to
protect them.

I would suggest reading the following three articles that give you an insight into the three different strategies:

Router Level: http://www.ieng.com/warp/public/707/4.html
Firewall: http://www.rapidstream.com/release_hacker.htm
OS (Linux): http://hblinux.iwarp.com/dos.htm

This should give you a good start in questioning your provider.
