Hello all!

I'm in the process of evaluating and selecting a forum engine to use on my site. There are so many scripts to select from so I would like to hear some comments about the WebHostingTalk community.

What engine(s) do you use or recommend and why? What about security, functionality, flexibility etc.? Have you experienced some troubles installing/supporting/using engine selected?

P.S. The disposition is: dedicated FreeBSD 4.4 server fully under my control.

Thanks!

I for one would recommend phpBB. From what I've heard it is a lot less resource intensive than many of the other forums out there. Another plus is the cost - FREE!

If you know php, its pretty easy to mod it to suit your needs as well. The only other forum I've worked with is Snitz (asp based for Windows) and it couldn't even compare to phpBB!

The latest versions of phpBB work with just about any database backend as well. I've used it with MySQL and SQL Server.

Vbulletin. Too cool. Worth the price. Complete source code if you need advance customization. Big community of users.

vBulletin all the way, no free forum can compare to the support of the scripting, and the programming skills....

They are working on version 3 so even more stuff to come....

I should go with phpBB.

I'm running it on my freeBSD 4.5 server. And it is running just great, especially with zend optimizer installed. :)
