I had a contract with a host, http://bubblehost.com and in return for traffic they said they will provide me with hosting for my site, http://deals.bubblehost.com then one day the site is down, so i contact them and they are sorry we had to use the spare machine because one of the other sites went down and your site will be back soon, now the host is ignoring me and doesnt want to give me my files back, what do you I do. I dont care about the hosting, I just want the database files from my site back.

Backup is not always that easy especially for big files; how would a user do to regularly backup 700MB db to his own computer?

Tar your files into a single file and ftp to another server (with a different provider in a different location). You can wite a script to do this automatically, say every week
Make sure you factor the size of your tar file and bandwidth costs in.

I keep a complete duplicate site of mine on my separate HD. When I make an update, I make the update to the site on my HD then update the site on web - instant backup heh..
Or
you could tar then gzip, should compress at least 40%.

I back up every week and burn cd's monthly. :) You will be amazed at how much you can put on a 20 Gig h/d.
