www.nic.co.ni

Apparently so the Nicaraguans are trying to rip off us Ulster inhabitants :stickout: They now sell .co.ni domains as if .ni would stand for Northern Ireland...

Although they are honest ("CO.NI is a sub domain of the Nicaraguan domain .ni, this a commerical offering to Northern Ireland as a politically correct domain name. It has been made available with the authority of the Nicaraguan NIC. The NIDR has the sole rights to distribute this name in Ireland and the UK.") I wonder which local will go with this flow rather than sticking to well-known familiar-sounding .ie and .co.uk domains...

"understands that .co.ni is a subdomain of the .ni domain"

So this is just a subdomain, or is .co.ni an official extention just like .com.ru or .co.uk ?

It's not an official extension, just a sub-domain.

I know of a few local businesses (through my colleague) who have went with the .co.ni option, mainly because .co.uk or .com has already been taken. It has worked well for them but that's probably because it's on all their stationary etc.

You're living in NI too ? Whereabouts ? (I'm in Belfast myself...)

60 GBP currently, damn they're not cheap... Costs more than 5 .co.uk domains !

They brand it as "Politically correct domain"... What if someone registers ira.co.ni or londonderry.co.ni ?

It's a nice attempt to avoid the "will we get the .co.uk or .ie domain local businesses here face, but they must block certain terms for sure to keep it politically correct...

PS: belfast.co.ni taken already :(

£60 + VAT I believe, so your looking at £70 odds.

Not cheap at all but for some it's a nice alternative.

wouldn't die like what happened to .uk.co ?

or because the NIDR is running it that would protect the end users?
