View Full Version : Found a 1u rackmount 10/100 swich (unmaged) for $70
StephenRS 04-05-2002, 10:38 PM Just in case anyone else needs something similar... took me a good 3 hours searching to find something reasonable price :)
The Allied Telesyn AT-FS708 is an 8-port switch that comes with rack-mount brackets! 1u size. Here is a link to the install docs, page 27 indicates rack mount hardware comes in the package (http://www.alliedtelesyn.com/webmaster3/files/allied/Website/ProductSupportDocs/Document/Fs708_m.pdf) - I found these switches for around $70.
Some of the places you can purchase them (http://www.epinions.com/Allied_Telesyn_Centrecom_FS708_Autosense_Switch__Hubs___Switches_AT_FS708_10/display_~latest_prices)
In my case, I'm puting a firewall in my rack and I need 5 ports to put my servers "behind" the firewall. I wanted a cheap 1u switch that I could use in the 3 co-location sites I am building out...
Have a good weekend.
Is it reliable? I don't want to wake up at night to restart it.
RackMy.com 04-06-2002, 12:03 AM I also know a couple people who use the HP 408 and it's really reliable. They are 1U and have a rackmount kit and can be found on ebay for less than $70.00 {http://search-completed.ebay.com/search/search.dll?ht=1&query=hp+408&SortProperty=MetaEndSort}
porcupine 04-06-2002, 01:17 AM 1u for 8 ports seems like a lot of space for a little connectivity, personally i like dss8+ dlink switches, reliable, quick, and tiny (smaller then my old 8 port hub) prolly fit 4 of those in 1u, and they're cheap too.
RackMy.com 04-06-2002, 02:54 AM I would not trust a D-Link as far as I could throw it :) They sometimes work, and other times have a mind of their own.

LOL, i've only ever had 3 of em, i can't think why most people would ever have more then that (of 8 ports at least) and never a problem, then again, if you're looking for a 8 port switch thats cheap, chances are you're not going juniper/cisco :D.
jayglate 04-06-2002, 05:51 PM Does it support SNMP? For using MRTG and such?
dektong 04-06-2002, 06:10 PM it says unmanaged in the tile. So "No", I would think... ;)
cheers,
StephenRS 04-06-2002, 07:37 PM I don't need SNMP + MRTG on the switch, I have a $1000 firewall system that does that about 1000x better than a crappy switch with 128K of memory in it.
the cisco 1u 2924 switchs are nice with 24 ports on them :) just my 2 cents but little more pricey...

If you're trying to imply quality, you might not want to mention that it was $1000.
How is a firewall going to supplant the lack of SNMP on an ethernet switch is what I'd like to know.

You can install a MRTG on your server and monitor the eth ports. With firewall, you can also set MRTG to monitor only for the traffic defines by certain rules on your firewall.

any device that can do communitys can do mrtg stats just a heads up.

What the heck are you talking about? $1000 is not enough to spend on a firewall? I'm using an Intel ISP1100 1u rackmount server. These have two on-board high-quality (Server class) Ethernet adapters.
Something special in a firewall that you know about that I do not?
As to your comment about how is a firewall going to replace a switch using SNMP? Well, the firewall inspects every packet going to my servers. It knows TONS more than any switch can tell you. It can keep track of session state and you can even program it to capture specific traffic if you want.
You can even use a product like WebTrends to find out WHO is using your traffic... Although I would tend to use Analog instead.
MattF 04-16-2002, 02:27 PM I believe there is another thread (somewhat recent) with someone making comments that Allied Telesyn switches are not very reliable. I'm a bit busy at the moment to pick it out, but no doubt someone else has read it too, post the url.
StephenRS 04-16-2002, 09:28 PM IN this thread: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=45013&highlight=Telesyn a member named AlaskanWolf said they had problems... but he clearly is talking about the managed switches, not the unmanaged switches.
Most of the time when I've had failures with unmanaged switches, it has been issues with moving devices from port to port. On some of my LinkSys and Compex switches, I've seen them "remember" a device was on a port and not work when the device changed ports. Had to power off/on switch to reset it. Since these will be in the same rack config, hopefully I won't have that issue :)
Thanks for the warning... I put my order in for a couple of these today and we will be beta testing the site for a few weeks before we go heavy...

dektong 04-16-2002, 11:53 PM hate a switch that takes up 2U space ;)
cheers,

2Grumpy 04-16-2002, 11:58 PM uhm, crap :( haha I did NOT notice that it was 2u I just assumed a 12 port HAD to be 1U but that pic now that I look at the big one looks like a 2 u don't it?
StephenRS 04-17-2002, 12:22 AM For the price of these switches, I may as well get a 4-port PCI Ethernet adapter and put it in my firewall :) DLink DFE-570TX 4-port PCI (http://www.pcbay.net/dlindfe5410s.html) - and before you bash it, this uses a different chipset than the consumer D-Link cards, and this is an excellent board.
It is crazy what these switch vendors want. I prefer dumb switches and smarter operating systems + protocols. Of course, that doesn't go over well with the ISP crowd (most of the people here). I find it foolish for web servers and the network gear to have such a "hostile" relationship...
It all started because MIS in corporate environment didn't work with the users. Instead of working toegether, they kept replacing hub/switch gear until they found stuff that allowed anything to be plugged in without bringing down the net. Co-Location sites of the 2000's are a lot like offices of the 1990's :)
If those damn ISP folks would quit handing Cisco $1000 for something that costs them $50 to produce in quantity, I wouldn't have to search so hard. The "rack footprint" premium is crazy.
Eat them sacred cows!
