I don't know how but root got deleted. I can't login in or su as root on the server.

When I try to su server gives this error "su: user root does not exist". Any idea on how to get root back, without a OS reinstall?.

OS: mandrake 8.1

The server is at a data center, I don't have console access. I can login remote through ssh with a regular user account. Any way I can do it without physically being at the server?

Too lazy to drive 65 miles to the data center :-)

Can't you ask their staff to help you with their remote hands?

I think for something like that you want to drive to the datacenter. I have enough problems getting remote techs to do far simpler things. Secondly, since it seems you do not know how this happened, you may want to do reload the OS, as it sounds like you may have been hacked.

Hack???

This all happan when I try to install Plesk 2.5 on the server.

The sever already has the following installed.

The latest:
-Apache
-Php
-Perl
-SSL
-Mysql
-etc...

First I downloaded Plesk 2.5 redhat source file, then I login through ssh as root and untar the file. Then I ran the install script, everything got screw up from there, the script got excite and crash. Next thing I new root is gone.

Again, I was trying to install Plesk 2.5 redhat build on Mandrake 8.1 OS. You guyz think that might be the problem? Plus the server was already loaded with all the other *stuff.

:D This wasn't a smart move but I wanna to see what would happen if I did that.
