View Full Version : WHT Realtime Chat Option

The idea of adding a realtime chat option has come up a few times and in a few emails that I've gotten in the last few days.

The question is.....

Would you guys like to see an advertising free real time chat option here at WHT?

Thanks for your input!

Something IRC-based would be nice.

Of course. Splendid idea.

I hit the 'No' button.

I like the idea of coming in and seeing lots of new posts, as opposed to missing live chat information.

Lats...

Absolutely.

I'd like to see a system where the username used in the chatroom would be the same as your WHT username though.

We are talking about real time chat for WHT, as in a Web Hosting "Chat Line"?

I would visit this... I would also start something like this, but I will let you beat me to it.

Rackshacks is real isnt it?

Looks like they're running an IRC server, and also have a Java applet ont he site to connect to it? Unless theres something different that happens when you connect to the server, haven't looked

Really for a lot of the chatty stuff that's posted in the lounge I wouldn't see any harm in it, but much of the value of WHT is contained in the past posts and available through the search function. If it began to happen that informative discussions were taken place in chat instead of in the forum, that'd be a loss.

As I think about it, though, I suspect that most of the conversation in a chat room would be just that, chat. Based on past experiences with other forums where there was a related IRC channel, I rarely saw substantive, informative discussions taking place in the real-time option.

So I'm undecided right now. I'll mull it over and vote later.

When ever I was on the server RS/EV1 operates, mIRC was complaining about certain commands not being reconized by the host IRCd, that any real IRCD would have, things like, map, etc... It may be RFC compliant, but many of the decent clients use standard commands... mIRC not being a decent client :)

Besides, WinNT... Nuff said :)

No, please.

If people want chat, they should go to host hideout!

Aargh.... You're killing me.

:bawling:

I see the group quickly splitting into two groups.

1. The chatters (who have a lot of spare time and no social life)
2. The non-chatters (the more professional folk who have lives)

The chatters will get to know each other and will form a clique. Soon, the non-chatters won't be welcome.

The non-chatters will begin feeling animosity towards the chatters, and will start taking over channels and squating on them.

The chatters will strike back by moving the chat discussions into the forums, flooding them with nonsense.

Then, you won't be able to stop the escalation of violence. There will be all out war, and every one will die.

The end.

I voted yes...i think it would give everyone a chance to chat about anything, not only webhosting (whereas we're limited to 1 forum to do this right now :D )

Yeah, we're one big happy family. Maybe there could be multiple chat rooms! Lounge, general hosting, etc. So people can talk about hosting if they want, without being interrupted by people having fun.

Who not "partner" up with Chicken and use the hosthideout?

Though chicken needs a new server and an ircd I think.

I think a hosthideout partnership would be cool as well. Since its php, a membership system could be put in place....

Squating channels? That's a thing of the past with irc services.

NO, we dont need one... if we do add one, the whole point of a discussion forum would be lost...

whatever chat you use, i'm impartial to except that it should be some sort of standard.

<yelling involved>
not some half-a$$ed piece of crap running on host hideout.. Its a JAVA applet, but compiled in J++ and packaged it as a CAB file not a jar..
I can't use that thing anywhere except from a windows box.
</yelling involved>

I run Os X and if anything , the chat system should be compatible with a unix variant... IRC would be awesome. It'd solve a variety of problems.. and those who aren't at their home computers should be able to use a web interface to that IRC server using a java applet, or phpIRC.

WHT is great because it allows its participants to interact with the rest of this community without much effort. The same should be the case for any realtime chat addon.

im off my soapbox now, sorry for any yelling.

I'd vote, but there isn't an option for "yes, partner up with hosthideout" :stickout

I also think you should link up with HostHideOut to provide the WHT live chat.

I also think a live chat would impact on the forum in a bad way, just a gut feeling.

i think it's a good idea, then again.

what about the board then? i would hate to see everyone just start chatting instead of posting..

also,

voxel.net doesn't allow irc servers

so be careful as to what type of chatsoftware you guys have

Let's keep the community as it is....go to hosthideout or elsewhere to chat. We have enough posts that are immature and chatlike.

I, for one, like things just as they are and am somewhat conflicted as I see Head Surfer say he intends to maintain the community as is and at the same time has multiple posts regarding opinions toward various changes. Changes should be very slow and very subtle and adding chat is neither.

I can tell you that when HHO was directly linked at the top of the forum (it was for a short period of time), WHT didn't slow down one bit. I think it is more an outlet to either try to get some opinions/advice quickly from people in the room at the time, as well as more a place just to hang out and chat about non-hosting related things. A release yet with people interested in similar things, unlike typcial chat rooms I've been to (and left quickly).

NO

I guess hosthide out his there for chatting purpose.

if people started chatting on WHT then i think some topics will be missed on threads because those will be discussed privately and whole purpose of having WHT forms will change.

:(

hmm Im tied 50/50. Id say if you are going to have chat it should be IRC. All these ****ty java based chat programs make people not want to use them. as a recomendation Id go for UnrealIRCD and Epona Services - ive used them and I know they're capable of the job :p

XTStrike
04-08-2002, 11:54 AM
pfft, UnrealIRCD - for IRC Kids - people that dont know how to detup a real IRC server IMHO

go for something stable like bahamut, the user on this forum "clocker1996" is the specialist on IRC servers I think :-)

im sorry, but what a load of ****.
I dont know how to setup an IRCD? Ive used bahamut, rage, and Urealircd and I think by far it has the most features available - as for easy to set up - it was as easy to setup as the others, so sorry to burst yer bubble :P

I doubt that rackshack needs help setting up an IRC server, or that they would trust any of us to do it for them.

I wouldn't.
