He's even still linking to our comparison page. Is it really that hard for these guys to put some tables together?

phpjames 04-04-2002, 07:39 PM Where do you find these? How do you tell if someone has copied your site?

webstats.. :)
I generally take a look at a site that has 50 referral hits I've never heard of before the 5th of April. It's our images that are doing the linking back. Graphics are like that - they enjoy calling home.
People who steal aren't usually too bright. If they were they'd have the intelligence to build they own. Most also don't remove the humanclick code from the bottom of the pages either.
Sorry if I have a tone in my voice (typing). It just makes me sick to my stomach the attitude of some people online. Thieves and spammers are right at the top of my list of people I'd like to take a large blunt object too.

Schnarf Network? That's too funny. I mean, they just misspelled "snarf," right? Content stolen from akashik, and the faq page is some text from builder.com...
From dictionary.com (www.dictionary.com/search?q=snarf):
snarf
/snarf/ 1. To grab, especially to grab a large document or file for the purpose of using it with or without the author's permission.
:homer: It's funny because it's true.
mahinder 04-05-2002, 02:34 AM greg why don't you email him and tell him to remove that link or you are happy he giving link to your web site ?
Mirage-ISP 04-05-2002, 07:33 AM Greg, may I email him for you? I know you are mad, but am laughing so hard. Such gull...that pretty swirly symbol used to also be a part of your signature at webhostdir. Anyway, joking aside, he needs to take his site down. Or simply refer him to your web design section and have him PAY for a design.
stlouislouis 04-05-2002, 10:29 PM Of course, you could file a copyright infringement suit in federal court -- your district, not his. Imagine the look on his face (and the lump in the back of his shorts) when he gets served.
Figuring -- what is it now -- $150,000 per infringement -- all those web hits? or just the graphics? -- I'll bet he would be willing to "settle" -- that or his parents would be! That would be a lesson he would not soon forget.
Bet that would do it!
Take care,
Louis

Dexter 04-06-2002, 03:20 AM gotta change the images to some nice hardcore gay pr0n man! that'll really F*** with him :D :D :D :D
Martie 04-06-2002, 04:05 AM  Total RIP for sure.
I agree about the hc code as well...Ive had a few funny stories with that...one thing for sure, they wont accept a chat!
Also not removing ALT tags, OR your https
I found one of our alt tags embedded in a bulldozer pic...and it says "We honor our guarantee at HostCaters.com"
And alt tags left in the various buttons (network, domaininfo, etc)
I dont understand some people either..
Tommy 04-08-2002, 05:23 AM Hi Greg,
They say that immitation is the highest form of flattery and if someone is copying you then you must having something good that other people value. Therefor you must be doing a good job.
There have been many new directory sites over the last two years that had a few too many co-incidental similarities to ours (latest example (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41648&highlight=webhostdir)). On one hand it's great that people want to be you, but on the other it makes you sick that someone is cutting corners and trying to benefit from your hard work.
A strongly worded letter followed by legal action is the only way forward.
Hopefully we can move away from the mentality that everything on the Internet is free and should be free. This easily leads to the mindset that it's ok to copy.
akashik 04-09-2002, 03:07 AM Oh well, there's a new site going up soon so all these guys linking right off the server are going to be a little disappointed when their graphics stop working. While the money value for copyright theft is nice these days, getting it out of losers like this is next to impossible I think. I was going to fire him an e-mail but the contact info didn't work on his site (no suprises), and whois was down when I checked it out...

Mirage-ISP 04-09-2002, 11:51 AM Anti-Hotlinker Mod Rewrite Script; stops people from hot-linking your images.
pu this script inside your .htaccess file, it will protect everything in the directory and below.
AuthUserFile /dev/null
AuthGroupFile /dev/null
RewriteEngine On
RewriteOptions inherit
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://.*yourdomain.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://XX.XX.XX.XX/.*$ [NC]
RewriteRule .*[Jj][Pp][Gg]$|.*[Gg][Ii][Ff]$ http://www.yourdomain.com/ [R,L]
Can't remember where I ran across this script. Maybe use it with your new site if you dont already have a script that does it.
bitserve 04-09-2002, 08:53 PM My brother has written a few popular "freeware" programs, and he had decided that he would make an example out of the first person to violate his license.
He found someone was selling his software, which is against his license agreement.
I helped him to find a lawyer, and he's pursuing the guy in court.
Although it's going to cost some money, he does expect to collect attorney's fees. And the best thing will be the press release on his web site, which will hopefully deter people from doing it in the future. He wants to have a reputation where people will think twice before violating his license.
Yet, somehow I don't think it will help with all of the citizens of other countries who either can't read the press release because it's not in their native tongue, or are beyond the reach of the US legal system.
So anyway, greg, according to my brother's logic you should make an example out of someone. If nothing else, you'll feel good about it. :)
