Hello

targate has changed their prices.

1 domain: 13.95
2 or more : 8.85
Transfer: 10

Will you continue with them or you will leave to another ?

That'll take some figurin.'
I surely won't recommend them as often.
But, I have a bulk account that hasn't been affected by the price change. So, for that, I will stay.

Hello
This just reflects the reality, that its not possible for them to maintain their systems and pay the salaries at $2 profit per domain.

When was the last time their external whois actually worked?

I bet GoDaddy is next....

Yeah, I just found that out today. I was going to
purchase 1 domain and saw the $13.95 price.
So I tried the 2 domains at once, and ended up
paying $8.95 each. That's about a ten dollar savings.
I was pretty upset they changed the prices, though.
I'm lucky I purchased 16 other domains in the past
couple weeks, before the prices went up!

While I wouldn't categorise myself as a full-scale reseller - just a web site designer who takes care of the domain registration - it is flippin' annoying to see this 60% price rise.

Could someone recommend a registrar with the same kind of facilities as Stargate - the ability to change WHOIS info, nameservers etc.?

Thanks

Why are you 'resellers' whining?

I noticed the increase in real-time; they had changed the back end but the front end still said "$8.95" so I called them up and set up a bulk account.

Prepay for 51 domains at $8 and your next batch will be at this rate, no minimum required. Good for all new registrations, transfers and renewals.

Stargate is small but very good. And they don't charge the $49.95 "special" for ownership changes like GoDaddy does.
Also URL forwarding for FREE (unlike GoDaddio).

Yep...

fsn: Old prices were 1 for 8.85 and 2 fo 16.00.

Even with the increase they are still the best value available.

SoftWareRevue: Why would you no longer recommend them? A price increase doesn't necessarily mean less value or less of a quality product. It's usually just the opposite.

Usually when someone asks for recommendations for the least expensive and still worthy registrar; I say StarGate.
Now, although still a good value, they are not on my "least expensive" list.
So, I would still recommend them. Just not as often.
I have several domains listed with them and a bulk account (of which I just added funds to yesterday) as well.
Maybe it was just the initial shock of the price hike. Not that it's expensive; just that it's a jump (percentage wise) from what they were.

Hello,

I personally must say that StargateInc just lost a Customer !
What they did with the Prices is not that what make My mad but that they dont inform they Customers that makes My very mad !! I dont got any Mail from them about the new Prices, nothing, I just see it today on the Website ... grrrr.... I hate Company's who first inform Press and then later (or never) they Customers ... so and now I search a new DomainRegistrar with a good ControllPanel.

GoDaddy charges $9 now, I just checked it. I have never used stargate's services, but I can say that for $ 9 godaddy's support is awesome.

I can't remeber the last time I was informed that the price of gas went up or that milk cost more.

No one called me to say that the cost to rent a movie at my local blockbuster was an extra 2 dollars this weekend.

What makes the domain name market any different than other products or services?

TheOp it is not as easy for BlockBuster or Arco to let you know that their prices are gowing up. But for stargate, they can notify clients with a click of a button. Arco and BlockBuster don't have your email address in an easily accessible database, to where they can email you when prices go up or go down.
Think about it..

I think I can hear most everyone, especially resellers, complain that they were sent spam.

An email about a change in services/price/etc is an informative email, not spam. This of course is in the case that it's sent to the customer database only. I'm a customer of Stargate, and it's a real kick in the pants to have to hear about the price rise in this forum. IMHO - they didn't send out an announcement about this because it's embarrasing. I can guarantee that if they lowered the price an email would have been sent out.

They just lost another customer. I understand a moderate increase in price but going from 8.95 to 13.95 I think its a little bit too much. I will just go back to good old gandi who charges 10.00 / year their external whois database works.

Why use Stargate for 13.95 when you can use directNIC (the best) for 14.95. Or Namecheap for 8.88.

TheOp
04-07-2002, 03:37 PM
Because Stargate.com includes url forwarding, POP3/web mail and ownership transfers in the 13.95. Namecheap, directnic and most registrars don't come close to 13.95 for the same features.

Geez. This is bad news.

Does that mean $13.95 for renewal with them?
I definately switching.
I have used both Namecheap and Stargate and there ain't much difference between the 2.
Of course, now with that kind of price, it makes all the difference.

I switched from Easyspace simply because I don;t want to to pay anything above $10 for a domain.

Hello,

I'm also looking to a Stargate alternative. NameCheap sounds good but I have a couple of questions:

Their http://www.namecheap.com/signup.asp sign-up page does not appear to be in a secure server. Can anyone confirm this?

Is NameCheap ICANN accredited?

Thanks,

Jessica

I transferred 1 domain to namecheap after stargate increased their prices...and Imust say I am happy so far.

I am not sure about their sign up page but their payment page is definitely secure.

It's not ICANN accredited but to my knowledge it is a reseller of an ICANN accredited registrar.

right before i was going to register two names with Stargate the prices change. i emailed customer service to ask them since i could get two names at 16 bucks would the renewal be 14 for each (the answer YES)... although he claimed with the rate increase, there will be some new features added that they will be releasoing soon. and i'm thinking what? and have the slightest idea...

i think i might be wandering over to NameCheap for business now, but Star has such a good rep, i'm just not sure.

A few minutes ago, I logged on to my NameCheap account through their secure server at

https://www.namecheap.com/login.asp

There's a (new?) link to it on their home page.

Hmmm, interesting find. I don't remember seeing that before.

Although, since I have high security setting on my browser, I got the following message when I clicked on "login using secure server" .... "This page contains both secure and nonsecure items. Do you want to display the nonsecure items?." Seems like parts of the pages are secured and some parts aren't.

Also, with these browser settings, I am unable to login using the secure server. I always get "Invalid User Name or Password. Please try again." Yet when I use their standard "non-secure" server, I login successfully.

Jessicam, I got the same message about the page containing secure and non-secure items.

When I clicked on "Yes" to allow the non-secure items to display, then my browser showed that it was no longer a secure connection (the little padlock went away).

So, I reloaded the page. When I clicked on "No" to refuse the non-secure items, I noticed that the banners at the bottom of the window didn't appear. They must be the non-secure items on that page. At that point, I still had a secure connection, and I was able to log on to the secure server without any problems, using IE 5.5 with my "normal" username and password.

Hope this helps you!

godfather, thanks for your input. I've tried both ways (clicking No and Yes), however I get the same 'error message'.

Strange. :(

good prices, but stargate's system has always sucked. i had been using stargate since about 2 weeks after they went online. for almost a year every 5-6 domains i would register would have problems... always at the payment processing screen. their sorry pieces of crap NT servers would get asp errors on the screen during my credit card approval. well, at that point, my card would be charged, the domain would be no longer available and it would take 10-14 days to get the domain assigned to me. the domain would show up in whois as registerd TO stargate with no contact info and no name servers. this happened MANY times until i gave up using them.

i REALLY liked their interface.. the features.... i would have loved to kept using them but waiting almost 2 weeks on numerous occasions to get a domain really sucked. i found registerfly.com to be very good and easy to work with and have just about all the features stargate has. $9.99/yr w/ $8.99 transfers. They also have an easy to account balance feature where you can load up some cash in your account with them and just register domains as you need with them with instant registration instead of inputing CC info every time.

I never used Stargate. I found a different place that offers the same services (including domain and email forwarding) for $7.99 per domain per year and to top it all of their support is quite decent too. I have one domain registered with them and I'm trying to transfer a second over from Dotster, but Dotster keeps claiming they never received the transfer request, while I know for a fact it was submitted twice.

Should I reveal the registrar I'm talking about, hmmm, I'll think about it :D

Probably an OpenSRS reseller somewhere in Pakistan.

GordonH

I don't think any OpenSRS reseller would be able to do $7.99

Their price for domains is $10 and even if you are in a special agreement I don't think it ever goes below $8

Hmm, sounds like Powerpipe. I thought about trying them, but I've been so happy with Namecheap and directNIC that I don't have a need to take a chance. Maybe someday I'll buy yet another domain name for no reason at all.

Yes, it is powerpipe.com

The staff there is quite friendly and the price is even friendlier. I do feel the urge to kill Dotster though, they're beeing a pain in the butt over this domain transfer. They say they received nothing, but I received the request confirmation twice from 'Universal Registrar Transfer Approval' or whatever it's called...

...It's called eNom. If it (the transfer) was processed at the registry level, it (the transfer) should Auto-Ack within 5 days of the request regardless if Dotster received confirmation or not. Sounds like a powerpipe/eNom issue to me.

I'm with Stargate and DirectNIC now.
I'll be transferring the domains to probably Namecheap and maybe RegisterFly.
I logged into my DirectNIC account and I don't see how it's any better than the other 3. The price is just higher, at $14.95/yr.
