this should be moved to the general forum but........

i like *nix hosting mainly because of its cost (FREE) and the number of control panels (CPanel, ensim, plesk, hostgui, etc) there are available

Also, there aren't as many security holes as in windows servers.

FreeBSD is the best more reilable stable etc. HostGui will work on it and HostGUi is going to rock as well by what we see :)

illusionist: please post your questions in the correct forum next time. The Suggestions and Feedback forum is for specific questions about WebHostingTalk in general. All other questions about web hosting should be directed to the Web Hosting forum.

The Web Hosting forum is at the top of the lists for a very good reason.

NT was made pretty much redundant by the release of Win2k, as for the other 2, it depends on what you are wanting to do - each has it's advantages and disadvantages.

Linux is definatley the way to go. Unless you need to use ASP (active server pages) you should be able to find the best hosting plans with Linux.

Personally... I don't think I would ever settle for a windows host. Windows is more expensive, it is less stable, and it has more security holes. Even Red Hat Linux (notorious for high security risks without the proper setup) is more secure 'right out of the box' in my opinion...

I would have to agree with everyone on FreeBSD, I think its the best *nix choice. It is very stable and secure, and who can beat free? I don't think anyone is going to pay me to use their operating system...hmm.. that would be nice...lol
