Trying to get a handle on the relative performance of these two OS and the costs.

For an equivalent load/performance, what would the 2 servers specs look like?

Put another way: if I have a 1GHz CPU, 512RAM, 40Gb IDE HD, on Linux, what would the Win server have to look like to perform equally?

What Windows server you want to deploy.. Win NT4.0 or Windows 2000 Server? Windows 2000 server has a higher requirement for RAM and slightly more for CPU than NT 4.0 I believe. And of course, Win NT4.0 has higher requirements for CPU and RAM than Linux.

It also depends what applications you look forward to run...

But if it's WWW file serving only, I guess you will need to throw in a bit more RAM and maybe a bit faster CPU. But if you are just starting, go with the same hardware you have and make sure you can upgrade it later (for example use dual CPU ready motherboard and make sure you have free slots for memory).

Thanks, Apollo. It was W2K I was wondering about. The use would be www. Mainly static, I guess, but some Db-driven dynamic stuff.

Do you have a more specific guess as to the Win resource premium on CPU/RAM? 30%, 50%?

Well, it's really hard to say the exact numbers..... but you asked for it! Let's say 30% on CPU and some 256MB extra memory, but then again it really depends on some another factors... ;=)

No, I appreciate it a difficult hypothetical question :)

Thnx anyway for your input.
