Developer, yes on the math. Not so much in design. But if you plan on pursuing programming you'll want to have some math down. English is essential for both. You will want to know how to write well and sound intelligent.

Hope that helps a bit.

Anything with a four years (BA) degree requires some level of math and english knowledge. Anything. :)

Err.....I don't see how knowing english is necessary for doing web development. I would imagine being a native speaker of a language gives you enough knowledge of the language = )

Knowing math at a basic level is necessary, such as basic high school algebra and geometry. But how much math you need to know depends on what you are doing. From my experience people that don't know much math end up being really bad programmers in any area.

So Would Ncea lvl 1 or in other words School Cert Level 1 be enough? for the basic level of Maths?

You're hosting and asking your parents what's involved in web design?

How much english and math is involved is completely related to the type of web design.

If you do graphics, you may need math, but the focus will be in art.

If you're doing client-side coding, 90% of the time math won't be an issue.

If you're doing content or SEO, English is important.

If you're doing server-side coding, math is important.

So it all depends.

Yeah, English is a must. I didn't catch where you're from? You seem to know English pretty well as it is.

Math, yes and no. Depending on what you have in mind specifically. GL.

Well, I'm not the brightest on maths and might not be the best at english but I would say that english is the most important subject to read. Math depends on what you're going to do as previous users've said.

Not to mention 90% of your customers will be English as a first language speakers. That's the main reason for it.

English is not the most important subject...in any sense. Yes you have to know how to read to do just about anything. But most people can read (at least in the developed world). Also the sort of writing skills they teach in you english classes both high school and college are totally useless you are going to write critical theory/stories. Mathematics on the other hand is extremely important every science uses it heavily, computer science uses it heavily etc.

I've known great programmers that have horrible grammer/spelling etc. But if you are going to write content obviously you have be decent at writing, my point is...you won't learn those writing skills in an english class.

I seriously wonder why english is so stressed in high school (you have to take 4 years of it in the US...yet science? only 2!). Additionaly english departments at universities....are clearly a waste good space that could be used for better things like ping-pong tables = )

It really all depends on how well one's English is. If you are not a native English speaker, then it will of course be more important that you learn it in college than if you are from the US and have learned it your whole life. You can apply one situation to everyone.

Your parents are totally right, everything revolves around math and english, especially internet/computer related professions.
but then again, thats just my opinion

Umm....you should know english but you appear to already know it (unless someone else is typing for you?). But yes you won't be fine just using a calculator, you'll need to at the very least use algebraic expressions etc.

To clear things up for all, i would say this person is from New Zealand. He is talking about NCEA, which is the national certificate for a year 10 student (about 15/16)

When he says English he means not the language like an english speaker learns french, but as a subjetc, like english comprehension or english literature.
