Hello,
What is the noticeable difference between a shared IP address and a dedicated IP address. I have used webhosts that offered both a dedicated IP address and a shared IP address, but I didn't see any difference. Is there any difference as to what I could do with the accounts? Are there any more problems associated with a shared IP address verses a dedicated IP address?

I do not fully understand this topic either, but I would like to.
From what I know, there isn't much of a difference anymore, but in the past there were problems securing shared IPs?
I am not sure, but there may be some security risks involving shared IPs, because if you ever had an attack against an IP, it would affect ALL the sites hosted on that IP...
From the host standpoint, it costs money and or time to upkeep many IPs, most hosts have to pay a monthly fee for each IP, so giving out shared IPs allows them to lower their prices a little...
Anyone care to add, or correct my misconceptions?

There are really only 3 reasons why you would need a dedicated IP address.
1) SSL
2) Anonymous FTP
3) Some very old browsers do not support the HTTP v1.1 header that is required for name based virtual hosting.
You shouldn't see any performance differences between IP based and name based virtual hosting.

If someone attacks a IP on the server, 99% of the time, if it's effective, you can kiss the whole server goodbye till they've had their fun and left.

Yes, questions are frequently repeated on this board.
Whenever I am actually looking for an answer I always do a search first. Sometimes searches do not come up that well, or people are looking for a quick answer though. There are also the people that are not familiar with the boards and have only just started visiting them.
