Systems Analyst is one of those rather "catch-all" terms that can mean a great many different things in the computer industry.

In general, a systems analyst is one who examines an activity or a procedure with a given result in mind, and then extrapolates the most efficient method of getting it done.

This works from both ends of the game, in the sense of either pre-planning a proposed project, or tearing down an existing one to allocate corrections or enhancements.

Usually a systems analyst is, first and foremost, a solidly able programmer, however; so one typically starts an education in this field by obtaining said skills and practice.

A system analyst is generally quite focused on a particular thing.

Gotta agree with etLux. The term "analyst" is often used when they don't know what else to call the position. In a broader sense any technical job involves analysis of a problem so that would can apply to anyone.

Depends on the company. In some companies a Systems Analyst is just a very senior programmer. In others the SA is more a designer and project manager doing very little hands-on coding.

I was trying to be somewhat kind in my explanation above, but this is absolutely true. Hiring authorities and so-called "technical" recruiters - who are often personnel jockeys with little "technical" knowledge at all - often slap the "systems analyst" label on most any computer-related position.

In one interesting case some years ago, I inquired after a "Consulting Systems Analyst" assignment, purported to involve "complex scheduling system development."

What they actually wanted was someone part time, to supervise newspaper routes.

Go figure.

Bwahahahah :D

In all seriousness though, here in Australia the term 'analyst' actually does apply to certain positions where it requires... analysis of certain areas of whatever you're doing.

Which I take to be analysing all the binary bits and pieces that fly by your screen while you're trying to track down which of your fellow office workers is secretly having a cybersex tryst ;) .

I've noticed (per above) that you seem more and more to have, ummm... how can I say this discretely? -- a little, uh, problem, there, BC.

But there's no need to be ashamed. There IS help:
