We just started a shared linux hosting to complement our growing IT consulting business.. But what's the best way to get customers specially local customers?

Local business journals are for the more "educated" business crowd.. but we'd like to target others who'd like to get website up .. etc.. anyone have experience with this?

One method would be to join your local Chamber of Commerce. You'd be able to network with other local businesses. At least two web designers I know get contracts that way. It would be best if you partnered up with a designer locally.
