View Full Version : More Ensim FAQs & How-Tos
misnomer 04-02-2002, 09:34 AM I don't want to tread on anybodys toes here, but I've created a site with detailed FAQs & How-To's on Ensim WEBppliance 3.0 at:
http://www.unofficial-support.com/
I decided to centralise all the useful information I have found in this and other forums, to help out those who have helped me in the past. There are no forums on the site because I feel there are already some great communities around, and I don't think there needs to be another one - at the moment anyway.
I hope you find the site useful, and if you could let me know what, if any, comments you have! Thanks!
UmBillyCord 04-02-2002, 01:38 PM I think your site is "officially" down. :)
I was looking forward to checking it out.
misnomer 04-02-2002, 03:02 PM I seem to be able to reach it ok... can you do a trace route to it, just to check the link between you and the server.
Thanks!
jayjay 04-02-2002, 03:30 PM Site comes in fine. :)
Keep that site going, I'm sure it will be great for alot of people!

misnomer 04-02-2002, 04:25 PM Hmm, not sure what your problem is, but if it persists you could access it through a free web proxy such as any of the ones listed at: http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Internet/Proxies/Free/?tc=1
I did try one of them which seemed quite good, and my site appeared unaffected: http://www.amegaproxy.com/
Cheers.
Mirage-ISP 04-03-2002, 06:26 PM kewl...something I been wanting to do, but never made out the time to do it...not necessarily on just Ensim, but on other Cps as well. Please keep it up.
If I may make a suggestion....., make it possible for user contribution of tips, techniques and how tos. You'll be amazed how quickly it grows.
I was going to do mine with a content management software like phpnuke or mambo. I'll certainly bookmark your site. And thanks :)
misnomer 04-03-2002, 06:31 PM Thanks for the support - I can't type fast enough to get all the howtos I want on the site!
I'll add a submission system shortly!
rence 04-03-2002, 06:45 PM Thank you, misnomer. That site may be helpful when I don't want to bother Ensim. :D
globe 04-03-2002, 06:50 PM Geez sounds like Ensim needs to be handled carefully. Isn't it a reliable panel?
4solutions 04-03-2002, 07:04 PM Can I please ask a quick question of you ensim experts?
I currently have a reseller account using WHT and CPanel, but I'm very interested in getting a ded using Ensim Webappliance 3.0 because it allows unlimited domains.
What would you all estimate the learning curve to be for becoming relatively proficient with Ensim Webappliance 3.0?
Is it pretty easy to add and delete hosting accounts, domains, email addresses, etc.? Is their sendmail function easy to use for end-users?
Can I use Ensim, even if I don't yet know Linux?
I would really appreciate your most respected opinions before I bite off more than I can chew.
Thanks,
Keith
BTW... Unofficial-support looks like where I'll be hanging if I get this dedicated. ;)
misnomer 04-03-2002, 07:14 PM Up until two weeks ago I was using Cobalt RaQs, and I would say that I am now pretty good with Ensim. I love it so far, and found so many cool features that were limiting on the RaQ. You can do most of the admin through Ensim itself, but there is still stuff you _have_ to do on the command line via SSH. But with all the HOWTOs already floating around on here, and at the RackShack forums (where I have picked up most of my knowledge) you'll find pretty much everything you need to know about looking after your server. I've just started trying to centralize all the HOWTOs & FAQs, hence my new site...
misnomer 04-04-2002, 09:31 AM I've just finished a new HOW-TO:
Using Red Hat Network (RHN) with Ensim WEBppliance™ 3.x for Linux
http://www.unofficial-support.com/modules.php?name=Sections&sop=viewarticle&artid=3
Let me know your comments! Thanks!
DaHOST 04-04-2002, 04:52 PM Not bad, not bad at all. :)

It's where I'm hangin'! :)
misnomer 04-05-2002, 07:43 PM Applogies if people have had problems accessing the server; it's crashed quite a few times today :bawling: The memory was faulty, but now it has been replaced.
I've also moved it to another server just to be safe, so you might find your dns is not up to date yet with the change.
If you have accessed the server in the past 24hours, then the old address has been cached in your dns, so I recommend you try accessing the site with the following aliases for the next day or two - they will take you to the new site.

One good thing that has come out of this is that I found and installed a very useful util called HotSaNIC - it lets you view cpu load, memory, processes, network traffic etc through your web browser. HOW-TO will be on the site very soon!
greggish 04-05-2002, 09:44 PM Do you really need to have 3 pop-ups? It just makes people :puke:
greggish 04-05-2002, 09:48 PM Oye, and an exit pop-up too... :puke: again...
misnomer 04-05-2002, 10:44 PM Sorry about the ads - they will be off the site in the next month. I am just testing what works out best, but hopefully I won't need to use them come May / June ;)
By the way, here is another one I just finished:
Upgrading OpenSSH on Ensim WEBppliance™ 3.x for Linux
http://www.unofficial-support.com/modules.php?name=Sections&sop=viewarticle&artid=4
I can recommend that this update is done as soon as you can, because it fixes some security holes present in the version installed on your server. As always, feedback is good :)

UmBillyCord 04-05-2002, 10:59 PM You really should shut off those annoying pop-ups.
The site is nice, but since this is also used to make advertising dollars (pop-ups), maybe these post should be in the advertising forums?
misnomer 04-05-2002, 11:16 PM Due to yours and other requests, I've taken off the banners which are causing the pop-ups! :D Hope this is better for you guys!
misnomer 04-05-2002, 11:21 PM Sod it :) I've taken off the ads that cause the pop-ups! Hope this is better for you :)
Chicken 04-05-2002, 11:39 PM This thread contains what seem to be bumps however it is actually three threads merged into one (the threads were posted in various parts of the main forums). I realize that some people are going to be confused as to where the threads are, etc., but this was the only way to retain all of the information, yet not delete anything off the board.
misnomer 04-09-2002, 08:01 PM I've just completed this HOW-TO:
Installing Bastille Linux on Ensim WEBppliance 3.x for Linux
http://www.unofficial-support.com/modules.php?name=Sections&sop=viewarticle&artid=5
If you want to ensure that your server is as fully secured as possible, then this is one big step in the right direction. By completing this HOW-TO, you'll tighten general file security, fully configure the IPTABLES firewall, and also install an excellent utility which monitors for port scans and reports back to you via email within a few seconds of the attack... Let me know your feedback....
bkiesz 04-09-2002, 11:11 PM Having a little trouble getting to the site.. Just an FYI
Looking forward to seeing the site!
Barry
misnomer 04-10-2002, 02:40 AM See if you can access the site via a proxy, like this one for example:
http://www.amegaproxy.com/
If you can, I guess there must be something wrong between you and my server. Thanks!
misnomer 04-14-2002, 07:08 PM Sorry to people who might have tried to access the site today - my experimenting in Linux caused major problems leading me to having to rebuild the site. It's been down for 12 hours, but its now back up and running!
misnomer 04-27-2002, 12:42 PM I have now updated the Bastille HOW-TO to include the installation of a newer version of PSAD, and also some help in maintaining your installation to (hopefully) cut down on the number of emails you recieve.
