Hi all-

How many IPs do you, as a reseller, actually use/need...Not "can" use, nor "wish you had". This is not an IP-based vs. name-based question. I am looking for good, straight-forward answers.

Please vote in the poll.

Thanks,
Lamar

How do you host a website without using a IP-adres? Or are the one's that voted zero that n00b to the hosting world that they don't know you need at least 1 ip-adress to host websites?

Or ofcourse, they don't host any website and even don't have one of their own. (Though I can't imagine that!).

Well, if the only IP address you use is the name-based shared IP address, then maybe that can count as zero, since it's not dedicated to you.

It depends. You can host 1000 domains on 1 IP address if you provide normal hosting services but if you plan to provide ecommerce services or something that requires SSL then you need one unique IP for each domain (which uses SSL ). So if you have 500 accounts like this you will need 500 IPs.

Good point. But, my original question was refering to dedicated IPs for your customers. How many dedicated IPs, for your clients, do you use?

Again, good point. However, how many do you use, not can use, or will need. Do any of your clients use a shared ssl cert? Our clients seem to be very happy to use our shared anonymous ssl cert (especially, when they find it saves them money;)). What is your experience with this?

Now the question is clearer to me :-)

I would say that you at leat have 2 ip's of your own. And another one for your customers.

2 ip's for your own because of your nameservers (a professional reseller has their own nameservers if you ask me). Offcourse you are able to run vhosts on the ip's that you use for your nameservers. Though I would do it if you don't need to.

If you don't have your own nameservers, then I would say you need at least 1 ip for your own website with SSL certificate (for sales and client-side).

A reseller does not need any IP's technically (they can use name based hosting - plesk/cpanel support it etc.), unless they need the following;

SSL - https:// - Secure Sockets Layer for secure credit card transactions. Not every site needs this so it's best giving away IP's seperately.

Anonymous FTP - Plesk I know required a dedicated IP for anonymouse FTP to work.

Nameservers - each nameserver needs an IP, if you provide 2 nameservers, you'll need 2 IP's obviously.

As I said before even if you are offering Namebased hosting you atleast need 1 IP-adress. So the minium is 1. Further more every self respecting webhost / reseller has their own nameservers running and a SSL-certificate for ordering purposes.

I agree that the reseller needs their own nameservers. One of those IPs can also be used as a dedicated IP for their own site. I suppose the other could be used for a dedicated for one of their clients.

I've been thinking about this and I would say a total of 2 minium.

2 for ip's of the nameservers and 1 of the 2 for running clients on. Although it would be a good idea to run nameserver 1 and nameserver 2 on the same server.

So if you would like to do it good. 2 of your own (nameservers + SSL for your main site) and then 1 for your customers.
