Hi!

First let me thank you all. I was able to narrow down my hosts in question to a few using this board.

My main requirements are (at least): 100 MB space, 3 GB bandwidth, dedicated IP, Mailing List, SSI/Perl/PHP, MySQL, WebMail, Raw Logs, Domain Parking allowed (I have my own DNS. No action from the host required. I just need a static IP)

I was able to narrow down the hosts in question to the following. Please help me chosing one of them.

http://www.akashik.net
- only 2 GB bandwidth
- dedicated IP?
- only one mailing list

http://www.cityhosts.net
- how many mailing lists? (not specified on their site)
- raw logs?
- domain parking allowed?
- how many mysql dbs? (not specified on their site)

http://www.tera-byte.com
- 20 GB bandwidth seems a bit high for the price
- web based mail?
- mailing lists?
- ssi?
- domain parking allowed?
- perl support? (CGI must not mean Perl)

http://www.site5.com
- domain parking allowed?

http://www.ukname.net
- raw logs?
- domain parking allowed?
- perl support? (CGI must not mean Perl)

http://www.hostmatters.com
- dedicated ip?
- only one mailing list
- domain parking allowed?
- perl support? (CGI must not mean Perl)

Which one would you chose? Any personal experience?

Also, if you can clear up any concerns I still have (see above), please let me know.

If you think that there is another host which perfectly fits my requirements but which I have not listed, please post too.

But primarly I'm interested in personal opinions of the above.

Thanks!
Mike

http://www.site5.com - domain parking allowed?

http://www.site5.com/virtual/pointers.html

0-10 domain pointers, depending on your account. Extra domain pointers $4/month.

I also have not used any of the above..... but site5.com comes highly recommended.

Good luck!
Rob.

Send in an email to Greg. He is an honest, respected web host. His servers are at the NAC in NJ (NAC is respected as being one of the best). He may can create a custom plan for you. You can not go wrong here.

I may as well throw in the disclaimer here: No, I do not work for Hosting Matters. Now that is out of the way...
HM showed us, while we were resellers, what it is to have a great host. We get our dedicated servers through them. Their servers are at the NAC also. You can not go wrong here. Yes, they have Perl support. Email about the other questions.

Sorry, I have no experience with the others.

Good luck,
Lamar

Perl is a form of CGI.

I have not heard of most of these guys, CrazyHostGuy is right though, I have heard of site5.com, and I don't remember hearing bad things about them...

Hope this helps a little Mike.
Good Luck!

FYI, no we don't offer dedicated IP's anymore (current customers aren't affected by this in case you're reading). We've shifted to namebased hosting like much of the world.

Everything else is open for discussion of course regarding the plan features. Just thought I should clear up that IP question from the horses mouth (so to speak).

Hi Greg!

Thanks for clearing that up. You should change your support section, because often it indicates that you are giving out dedicated IP's.

Here for example:
http://www.akashik.net/supportcenterfiles/quickstart.html

You can access your control panel by typing your http://ipaddress:2082 in the address bar of your browser.

This gave me the impression, that one would get dedicated IP's when signing up. I guess that's still a relict of old times :-)

Thanks again for clearing up things!

cheers
Mike

Glad to help. Yes, the support docs need a little TLC at the moment. They're being rewritten as time allows though.
