Zachary McClung 07-28-2005, 05:44 PM Good Evening,
I am just wondering if all you receive just as many hiring request as I do on a weekly basis. The more I find myself getting out and about and showing the name of the company off the more seems to pore in.
And, none of these requests are individuals over the age of 18, with job experience, and with certifications. They are anywhere from he age of 13 to 17 years old who are looking to be level three tech admins.
What do you all feel on this? Since we all are host. I do not expect hiring anyone who does not have a resume and claims to be able to perform the operations necessary.
Tomer 07-28-2005, 06:01 PM We also receive a few every month. Usually the message itself is very short, they just ask if they can work in the support department. I usually response saying we're not looking for anyone but we'll keep their email on file. ;)

Zachary McClung 07-28-2005, 06:56 PM Tomer,
I had a certain individual today lie about their age and then labout a couple other things. I found this kind of interesting to say the least. He was looking to do billing. At this point in time, I would not let anyone but myself do billing/Accounting.
I have no idea who this person is and I am not about to start trusting people I do not know over the Internet.
VolkNet 07-28-2005, 07:01 PM Hahaha sad to say - my best friend started working for a hosting company (not ours) when he was 14 - I shortly followed.
jt2377 07-28-2005, 07:12 PM do they use l33t or hax0r on their resume?
Torith 07-28-2005, 07:13 PM I would not hire anyone under the age of 18. As well they would have to have proof of knowing what they say they know. Also a few other things.
Zachary McClung 07-28-2005, 08:02 PM Hi,
I do not have an issue with hiring under the age of 18. I know several smart individuals who study at the local technology center. I know the instructors well because I have been to their facility several times.
What it comes down to, is random individuals out of the blue coming and asking if I am hiring. Then they will not provide a resume and they are trying to set the rules.
Do not tell me how to run my company. :) If you want to go start your own. I am assuming though you do not have the time or the money though if your looking for a job. And, in the U.S. you cannot own your own business solely.
PixelManual 07-28-2005, 09:28 PM Wow, 13 year olds claiming to be level 3 techs. I find hiring someone under 18 can work, but you definitely need to be able to trust them and they, of course, must know what they are doing.
Never let someone else do your billing unless you trust them or are from an out-sourced company.

Zachary McClung 07-28-2005, 09:35 PM Soon I am going to train a partner and friend of mine to do the billing of customers. It is to difficult to have to make sure that everything is running properly if I need to leave for meetings or a trip. I have been in meetings all week and there are way to many other things that customers need./
I hope to have him up and running soon.
Does anyone else have any comments on this topic?
Torith 07-28-2005, 11:11 PM Oh I know there are younger people then 18 year olds who know their stuff. The way I look at it is though if the person is 18 or older they are
1. Out of high school
2. Or getting close to getting out of high school
3. Can handle more stress at times (not saying young people can not).
4. Can work during times when younger people can not.
In fact I have much respect for younger people, and have paid younger people to do work for me for the last 3 or 4 months now.

Zachary McClung 07-28-2005, 11:37 PM Good Evening Once Again,
There are some very talented young people on this forum and in the world. One individual who contacted me was 13. He said he would like a job as a support rep. The thing about it, he had two certifications. I will look them up and let you know. By my understanding and I did check, his father owns a computer store in CA.
I told him that I would not do any hiring until he was 18. The age is not the issue. The issue is the payroll, him being in CA and I am in MI. All the legal issues that arise. I do not know CA law. I know Michigan's more then I should.
When he turns 18 which is a long time away five years if I do my math right. I hope to be close as can be to building our own data center. He can move out to wherever it might be. Anywhere between Kentucky, Tennessee, or Georgia and work for me then.
I find it amazing, that an individual who is running a web hosting business with the technical skills get hammered by some individuals on the former; however, that same individual they are willing to hirer.
What do you think of hiring someone out side of the country you operate in to perform support? I had an inquiry from out of the U.S. and I was hesitant to even look at his resume. I wont hirer someone out side of the U.S. but I am wondering what you all think?
AH-Tina 07-30-2005, 03:07 PM We used to hire staff from all over the world. Its a big ol' tax nightmare, not to mention it really sucks when someone you trusted walks off with some of your business assets. Its a huge hassle to track them down across state lines.

Zachary McClung 07-30-2005, 03:16 PM One of my biggest issue is trust. There was a certain individual who I was impressed with but he lied about his name. So that is where I draw the line. I cannot have that in a business. Especially, Biz Hosting Network determines whether I eat or not. It makes sense to me to only hirer the individuals who have the same outlook as you do.
Anyone else has an opinion about that?
