Can anyone give me an idea of the costs to advertise in the various web host directories.

you should send inquiries directly- I would also suggest you to put your e-mail in their mailing list (or even better add your host to their database and allow them to send special offers). From time to time they send out special pricing and deals on advertising that may work well for you.. but then again it means they have free spots (not enough advertisers...)?!

Just contact them directly and see what they are doing. Also say them what amount oof impressions you want and how long you would liek to advertise.
