View Full Version : How many web hosting providers in this world ??
ansari 04-01-2002, 05:17 PM Hi,
There is one question in my mind.
There are too many of web hosting providers are serving their services, my question is that all providers are getting good business ??
I just tried to search on yahoo and got 7900+ companies :look:
Thanks.
Akash 04-01-2002, 05:20 PM I have to agree to a certain extent. Yes, there are many (maybe too many) hosts to choose from, but a number of the hosts that you will find on any directory will make more money catering to local businesses rather than online....that could be a reason as to why there are so many hosts out there....
jonny b 04-01-2002, 05:42 PM how many hosts are in that other world you know about ;) :D
Cheers,
ansari 04-01-2002, 06:09 PM :) This is very interesting question :)

And you never know...this other world might have unlimited pipes, hard disks etc....
( sorry, couldnt resist! ;) )
Cheers,
Eladesor 04-01-2002, 07:54 PM The real question is - how many think they are out of this World ;)
CrazyHostGuy 04-02-2002, 10:29 AM I've heard estimates as high as 14,000 web hosting providers..... but many of them are 12 year old computer *nerds* (no offense meant by that term.... I too am a nerd :D ) running a shop from there bedroom and hosting sites on their own computer with a super-fast ISDN line :stickout .
So it becomes a marketing game.
- Those who can market themselves the best will GET the most customers.
- Those who can provide the timeliest and most accurate and helpful support will KEEP the most customers
Recommendations are gold. Find out what web hosting companies are being recommended in forums like WHT, and you'll find a company that has a great reputation.... not just great marketing skills.
Would you rather your hosting company to be better at marketing their services, or at providing a great product resulting in happy customers?
Cheers!
Rob.
ansari 04-02-2002, 10:32 AM WOW ! there is a lot , I am not providing web hosting services :D .
Gordo 04-02-2002, 10:47 AM Albert Einstein was supposed to have had a sign in his office that read:
Everything that counts can not be counted, and not everything that can be counted, counts.
iBridge 04-03-2002, 03:59 AM Great quote, Gordo.
Competition can be a good thing, especially when it drives prices down and service up. Keeps companies on their toes. Of course, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. :erm:

ansari 04-03-2002, 04:53 AM But, I don't think that cheaper providers is always provide good services and it is hard to maintain quality services with too low prices.
TheDoctor 07-23-2002, 07:47 AM ansari .. I think the question should be.
"How many GOOD webhosts are there in the world"?
Seem every man and his dog is offering 'Webhosting"
Unlimited Bandwidth .... as long as you don't actually use it.
Unlimited subdomains ... all eating up your unlimited bandwith
Unlimited emails .... isn't that marvelous more spam to delete
Unlimited promises .... limited delivery
Unlimited Support .... every other thursday between 3 and 4pm
Between webhosts offering us the world for 49 cents a year or $30 once off setup fee then free for life, pop-up adds, webhosts vanishing into the sunset, spam, spyware, downtime .......
Oh the marvels of the new electronic age and the marvelous FREE world wide web.
anon-e-mouse 07-23-2002, 07:57 AM There are many wannabe hosts, out to make a few bucks that just die in a month or two. If you want to find one, do a search for *reliable hosts* at hosting forums. If you want to start a hosting service, be sure to have a very good business plan before hand. :)
code_renegade 07-23-2002, 12:12 PM And that's just the tip of the iceberg. There must be tons of resellers out there, so the numbers should be just skimming the surface :)
nvphone 07-23-2002, 12:31 PM There is only one host:
The one you are using.
CrazyHostGuy 07-23-2002, 12:41 PM No... there are two....
You forgot about the one you used to use, before you switched to the one you currently use. You know, the one you can't say enough bad things about :D

I think Rob hit the nail on the head. To be honest, I think our marketing leaves a lot to be desired. But we have a very high retention rate - probably because we're all geeks and like what we do. ahhaha
Anyway, experience tells me this is right on.
ChowSumDung 07-25-2002, 02:01 PM Official count of web hosts: 4.2 gazillion

I do not agree with this. Most that get recommended here use the buddy system to create a buzz, then a few months down the road, they are gone or suck. I can name countless WHT success to WTH SUCKcess stories. This holds true for other forums also.
Word of mouth is the best way to find a good host. Friends, family, etc... There are very few host I would even think about recommending from here, let alone host with. FQ, Pair, Voxtreme, to name a few that I would use. And this is because the way they represent themselves here and the duration of proven business success and customer satisfaction they have. (Voxtreme maybe not years in business, but they have been an early bird to the low cost reseller model).
Another funny point. Places like FQ and Pair get very little referrals or press here compared to the fly-by-nighters that show up here. And newbies to WHT talk always fall for the trap of picking the currently buzzed about host on the forums, and miss the true quality host.

Very true. :)

IMO, I think that number is much highers and about 80% of those could / should go stop hosting. They are just there for a quick buck and there would be no loss of quality if they disappeared. Some may be unprofitable. Some may have been dead on arrival. An many do not differentiate there products and services to well (dime-a-dozen). There are too many hosts out there and as the big ones merge, I think some of the smaller host should think about combining resources so they can become more profitable (not the $5 hosting making 25 cents per account), provide better service to their clients (timely responses, accurate billing), and properly maintain their servers to minimize downtime (pool techs to form a larger trouble call team). Remember, people are willing to PAY for good quality and service.
deathlord 07-25-2002, 09:28 PM There are many host's out there. More then you could imagine. The webhosting industry's competition is insane.
MotleyFool 07-26-2002, 08:40 AM How many tobacconists are there in the world and how many gas stations and grocers?
markcastle 07-26-2002, 09:02 AM I think there are between 300 and 500 in the UK that are more than just a one man band.
