View Full Version : Advice on a robust server solution?

Hello -

I am currently looking to find a new hosting solution for a site that was hosted on a HostPro vServer plan. Since Interland has bought HostPro, all options for upgrades on the vServers have been frozen and they're trying to push everyone to go to the Freedom servers. I am not interested in this, since I've had a disastrous experience with the Freedom server for another client and I want to avoid Interland.

Does anyone have suggestions for a solution that would not involve the Unix Administration duties that something like the Freedom Server requires? I am not interested in being a Unix administrator, but would rather have that handled by the hosting company.

I need a SPEEDY server with capabilities something like this:

800 - 1.5GB storage space

30-50 GB of Bandwidth per month

PHP/MySql (e-commerce is based on a database driven catalog as well as a lot of the content for the site)

dedicated certificate capabilities

custom CGI scripting capabilities, not just from the root cgi-bin

Flash/Quicktime/Real Player capabilities

Administrative panel similar to HostPro's vadmin panel, but way better than Interland's vadmin. Should include phpMyAdmin as well.

Hosting company should have VERY solid tech support (phone option in emergencies would be desirable) and should handle all aspects of the seamless transfer of DNS and e-mail services.

So, that's what I'm looking for. Is there any hope? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Basically you have three options:

take a small dedicated managed servers, this should fit your needs perfectly (with 50 GB traffic strongly recommended)
get an account on a server with only a handful accounts (guaranteed by the host)
get a virtual private server but ask who will manage it

What's your budget?

Thanks for the info. Is this a trick question? ;)

I'm planning to be in the $100-$300 range. I know there are cheaper options and more expensive options, so we'll just see what we come up with. So, in that case, where we want reliable service and a super speedy server, which would you go with? The first option? Is it possible to get something like this where the admin is handled by the hosting company?
