Just found this awesome website, looking forward to being a part of it. The reason I post is I run Exbabylon Internet Solutions, and I have run into what I think is the need to begin providing my own hosting services. What I am really looking for is a simple reseller system, where I can provide my clients with hosting for their website included in their monthly "Maintenance Contract". I have looking into Venture's Online, and it seem a reasonable system for this type of system. What is your experience with them, and how do the other webdevelopers out there work details such as this out?

Also, I will be needing the function of registering domains names on a whole level. Any suggestions, I have looked into OpenSRS, anything better out there?

Thanks for your feedback,

Alex Stanton

I have heard good things about Ventures Online but have never used them. I would also recommend www.hostmatters.com where you essentially can purchase their plans at 50% percent of retail and resell them at whatever price you like.

I went with Genius Hosting (www.genius-hosting.com) and so far have been happy with them. The reseller deal is super simple, which was attractive to me. Basically, you get 100 MB of disk space and 1 GB of file transfer for $1.00 per month with no setup fee. In each 100 MB/1 GB you are allowed two domains. The minimum is $8 per month, so at minimum you will get 800 MB space and 8 GB transfer.

I bought in at $8.00 per month to begin with to host about 8 domains I have laying around.

One thing that attracted me to Genius was the fact that the guy in charge, Thomas, is up front about the fact that he works this business around his school hours. I was impressed that he openly admitted here in these forums what some others might try to hide. Others might want to portray themselves as available 24/7 even if they're not.

Thanks scslawin, however my clients tend to be very demanding. And just the fact that he doesn't offer 24/7 service is enough to deter me. It looks like he's got a great thing going, I just can't put my clients in the hands of a student run business with no staff. Although it is something I am going to be tempted to check out.

A few questions, have you experienced much down time on that server, and does it offer personal SMTP/POP accounts for EACH domain? Also, does each domain just a pointer, or does it actually point a a directory of your choice?

You pay a "X" amount of dollars per month and then you can host as many domains as you like inside your disk/data limits. You setup the domains yourself and they manage the servers etc. :)
