View Full Version : Need domain ideas!

Hi All - I'm sorry to be posting this here, it's kind of off topic. The reason I am is because I've been trying to post at SitePoint.com's forum for domain discussion, but I can't post for some reason. I haven't posted there for a while so maybe that's why. Anyway, I am wondering if you could help me decide on a domain name. I am creating a site that will mainly be giving away free graphics. It will also give my visitors some advice on color schemes that work well for web design. Also have a community feel...forums, etc. I think I make pretty good graphics, I would say better than alot of the average free graphics site. I want that to come across in the domain to someone who just sees my domain. Like when they see my domain they know that my site is "the" place to come for great looking graphics, also that their search for free cool graphics will be "answered." Just incase I get more interested in designing sites for people, I also want to make sure the domain could still be used if my site evolved more with a focus on a web design service. I want something short, easy to remember and something that will be easy to brand...something that will really stick out in people's minds. I have written so many names down, I'm just trying to find the perfect one and really stand out from the rest. Here's one I came up with...prografex.com. I'm afraid even to put this here because someone might want to take it from me. But please don't...I'll make your life miserable if you do (just kidding..sort of LOL). Again, sorry for this being kind of off topic. If anyone could give me some suggestions it would be great! I'm gonna try sitepoint one more time, so you might see this same message there if you go there too!

Thanks,
Carolyn

With domain names costing $10 a yr, why not just register it?

Off topic? Well since you are the thread starter it can't be off topic, heh. Give it time. We all tangent pretty well.

You can't post at Sitepoint because you haven't posted there recently, you are correct. (In case you don't know, BC and I 'advise' the domain names and hosting forum o'er yonder. Email whatever link is at the bottom of the Sitepoint forum with your user name, etc.

I emailed you one domain I came up with.

I like that name. But one thing to think about is that are you striving to get a lot of hits, if so you need a domain that anybody could remeber. If not then go with that name.

I am thinking for ya.

also added, you can have more that one domain leading to the same site. If i am incorrect about this someone correct me. Because i have done this several times. Make one any idiot can remeber, then one a real person can remeber.

Just my thoughts.

Also, what kind of images will be available, clip-art, templates, what.

sure, domain pointers are easy and normally cheap (unless you're with a nickel and dime host - the recommendations you get here will steer you clear of that!). If you're looking for some real name branding and marketing, one name will do it, for SE traffic most folks have more than one.
The name is pretty cool albeit a tad hard to remember the exact spelling.

Based on words you used to describe your graphics, I came up with this one. It is currently available:

http://www.standoutfreegraphics.com

GraphicTower.com is available, very good name, I would register it if you won't :)

FatAssMamaGraphics.com is available.

This is a sure winner.

etLUX, you crack me up! That is the funniest name you suggested!

Nam - that is a really good one. Would you mind if I put that on my top list, or are you gonna register it?

tomcat - that is a really good one, but i'm afraid it's a bit too long. Thanks for your input though. What about standgraphics.com. Does that make any sense?

I was only half kidding about http://www.FatAssMamaGraphics.com ... probably the singlemost important characteristic about a domain name is that it is memorable. A little extra length will be tolerated well enough, if it's easy to type and really tough to forget.

Names like http://www.StandardGraphics.com are all well and good... but they tend to be forgotten somewhere between fast and faster.

If you like any, any name, stop asking and go get it. Otherwise, you'll be regret, just like me who regret now because of losing so many good domains, few of them are:

photoshop.com (pucharsed by adobe now, I believe)
webmasterhome.com
financeindex.com
easypromotion.com
...

The day I checked these domains, they were all available, a day later, they gone, back about 2 years ago.
