the problem is people try and regiser and get an email for a link to conclude the dsigning up process but the link tehy get emailed soesnt work

Your problem is simple. You most likely have the wrong link in your Admin Area Preferences. Make sure your domain name is correct and not set to the default "yoursite.com". Could be something else, but that is one of the most common mistakes encountered.
