It was my interpretation that he wanted to open a webhost company offering services to the people of India.

There is alot of potential in the indian market. If I remember correctly, I read an article saying that the Indian hosting market was one of the fastest growing at the moment (though it is quite small compared to other major markets).

There are some good Indian providers as well. But really the main problem with India-based servers is the high bandwidth costs. However, Singapore could be a good idea to have servers in if you wish to target India

There is a potential for more or less every idea. The hard work has to come from you. Ask yourself can you give up the time? With this you should draw up a business plan and research hard. As Yash said the Indian market is growing. Go for the opportunity with open arms, That's what i say.
Good luck with your venture.

There are fly-by-night operators in any market. I've come across several established webhosts that target only India. They have a large # of clients and a good # of servers. You can PM me if you want some names. We have a New Delhi office and we absorb staff from alot of web hosting companies in India.. there are lots of them. Infact there are many foreign hosts in India running their own operations.

Most have their servers in the region or in the US. There are some though that have put their services in VSNL, or the other few datacenters in India. sites like bazee (now ebay.in) host locally in india so really there is no issue with quality, just pricing. Net4India was one of the first companies that established themselves several years ago with alot of TV-based advertising. Few companies do that these days but really the only way to target Indian customers is via newspapers or TV (if you can afford to shell out several million $ every year). They have grown quite a bit owning a # of datacenters in India. However bandwidth continues to be the most expensive factor in india and that is really what makes people think hosting in India is unattractive

But most indian customers aren't looking for 100MB or 200MB of space, or tens of hundreds of GB of bandwidth, rather small packages. That is why you see these 10MB packages... And most indian customers tend to pay annually, not more than $40 to $50 a year.. But there are ALOT of people in India that either already are hosting or will potentially host in the near future, in that price range..

I'm considering getting a server in my bedroom in the near future, but this doesn't sound wise as the fastest internet connection you get in india is 2mbps/Rs.42,000($800) a month, it is SERIOUSLY WEAK I'm using it right now. I couldn't possibly get all the fixes, support, hardware, updates etc right here. But i have to say, there is a HUGE market in India for webhosting

Well, that's why there are datacenters.. All of them are multi-homed and do not depend on 2mbps connections :)

2mbps certainly isn't the fastest you can get, and $800/month is on the higher side. There are ADSL providers dishing out 2mbps cheaper..

But yes bandwidth is expensive in India. That is the major hindrance. However there are alot of bandwidth expansion projects going on atm. One of the largest is a 5tbps link through singapore (under-water fiber optic, by Tata Indicom).

Thats what I'm on, dsl premium

I visited the VSNL datacenter a few weeks ago, it was horrible with rats roaming around and a pungent smell in the air. And lots of dust

lol, that is an extreme respresentation. I have not visited it personally, but I know people who have and its a decent facility.

It is definately not the best though, look at Reliance's or Net4India's datacenters. They are built to the best standards

Can you tell me how to contact the reliance datacenter? I'm very interested in getting a colocation rack atm

dear auracletech
as tomer says, i want to have a co. offering hosting services in india; to be a reseller of a leading (!!) u.s.a or india based company... if i am clear...

dear yash ji
thanks for the detailed mesg.

why is it that u dont tell of yourself? i mean , i could sign up with you too, isnt it?

how is delhinet dot com? i have used them 5 years back for some sites. they were earlier than net4. they were the ones to offer exodus and verio, network solutions and other tieups. was great to start with. then net4domains came with better (i didnt need some of the things after the dot com bust) offers and i had to shift. how is their(delhi net) reselling? btw, i used web2010 in 1998 to 2000 but for individual hosting for clients who didnt bother about whois and so on. web2010 was good but even they didnt come pure when there were glitches. in fact i could not do anything about an mx for 3 months!!!

the problem with indian (india based) reseller-offerers is that they do NOT give the same normal reseller benefits and options as companies in u.s. do. in fact, i have seen that the more they 'know' the reseller, the less support probably. i think - i dont know about your company- many of them do not even offer anonymous listing, reseller dns etc... what u.s. companies offer to their resellers on a straight basis - i.e. without any negotiations etc.

if i sign up with u, would i be having those facilities and bells and whistles such as control panel, tech cross support etc? why does ur site have only us$ based listing? will my reseller auto panel have rupee denominations?

but should i check out u.s. based resellers?

not only yash but others could also suggest whether i should go in right away for the co location or dedicated server ... or can i go in for dumb reselling now and migrate to a higher platform down the line? since the indian market may need only limited tech infrastructure..

btw, do companies offering reselling (u.s., indian) take care of the database, domain name, mx etc setup for down line clients? i would like to know that specifically. i could do it personally for a few clients but ones the numbers grow (:-) they will, wont they?) i would have to get the principal do it or get a person from someone....

is anyone using reliance data center as a normal option - without knowing any person there- since there is no pricing details on their site etc

LOTS of questions? but this forum (wht) seems to be up for such serious queries!

thanks to all those who answered and to all those who might.

do you feel that my query can be put up in any other section to get wider response?

pl. also point me to forum pages which offer answers to any redundant questions i might have asked. pl. excuse.

dear napster
thanks for the good will. itll be of great use. same to u too and gods blessings !

regards
