Is there any real advantage of a thawte wildcard if i want to secure 4 sub domains ?

i.e thawte cert = £125
wildcard = $400 + $50 per sub domain.

hence if i do 4 individual certs it would cost $500, but if i opt for a wildcard it would cost $600.

Looking at their prices, wildcards only really come into their own after 6 sub domains.

It sounds like you answered your own question. :)

I think they are more usefull. Because you can use as many subdomains as you want. I even believe you can offer ALL your clients a subdomain by just rewrting the url in apache, by rewrite rules.

I don't really understand what you're saying about a fee per subdomain. I though a wildcard certificate could be used for *.domain.com, hence the name 'wildcard'...

I think he is trying to say that a wildcards SSL-certificate is only usefull, more profitable when a customer wants 6 or more subdomains configured savely with a SSL-certificate.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thawte for example not only charge for the wildard itself, but $50 per sub domain that you will use with that wildcard

Stay away from thawte. We have 5 wilcard certs and they changed the pricing on us. They want $50.00 per sub-domain and if we have 300 sub-domains, it can run a heafty price tag.
This would have forced us to raise our fees.

We where a hosting partner of theirs and now have dropped them just for this reason. We are now using Geotrust.com and can have unlimited sub-domains for $500.00 year per/ *wildcard.

Best of luck.
