View Full Version : Instant Messanger Standardization (IMS))

Too many instant messanger applications these days. You need to have ICQ, AIM, YIM, MSN and whatever else there is. Hell, I had to buy 256 ram just to support the darned things.

Anyway, i'm getting off topic. What I was actually thinking about, is that I dont like the way these other messengers work, which ICQ has added too now as an option. This thing I dont like, is how instead of having a flashing tray icon when you recieve a message, you have a permenant/ish window that comes up. I find its worse, you're more inclined to write small messages, or even a word per message. And because if this speed that you can message at, I always find myself making big spelling errors. If i'm going to have all these messengers open, i'd rather they didnt hog my start menu space. Why can't they all just work like icq, with the good old flashing icon. Is it so hard to add that as an option? Do they lack the coding ability to add such a feature? Have they only trained the monkeys so much?

I think there should be a set of standards that instant messenger applications need to follow. Then I would be happy, and this post wouldn't be here. They could have lots of rules, like history and single message mode. I really do not like the fact that Microsoft just seems to think that any conversation you have on their software isn't worth recording. There isn't even a 'save buffer' or similar menu item. Along with this, should be a Smilie standardisation, with the same smilies everywhere, maybe even on internet forums. Really good ones, I find the MSN smilies very limiting, I mean, who needs a smilie with those green and white... block.. people things. YIM on the other hand, very good, and I don't think ICQ even has them.

Sorry for posting this seemingly meaningless message, but it has been lingering in my mind for a bit. Also, it is a result of me sitting infront of the screen 12 hours straight

that's why choice is such a wonderful thing. MSN is the only one I find enjoyable to work with. It also gets updated along with everything else, so it's set and forget.

I don't like either one of those messengers.
So I voted "Easter."

On the other hand; if Trillian supported the message archives of the others, it would get my vote (although it isn't a choice in the poll).:(

I knew you'd get confused Dennis, that's why I put the Easter option there. I guess I did stuff it up a bit, because Yahoo!!! IM is kinda a milkshake of ICQ and MSN.

You can download MSN Plus or something, that will allow you to record and save logs.

I use Trillian as well though, I love to have everything in one app. Takes up less memory and is much more organised. Plus I can decide to have ICQ-style chatting or MSN-style chatting. Or even something inbetween :D. I never wanna do without again!

I like MSN messenger. I tried Trillian but didn't really like it.
I also use ICQ. As matter of fact, I use ICQ mostly but I like the way MSN messenger works.

I like MSN Messenger because it is small, and simple and it does its job.

For everyone who said they tried Trillian, did you try Trillian before or after version 0.70 (release somewhere in December)? Because the differences between 0.7x and the versions before are HUGE. What are your reasons for not liking it?
