View Full Version : new host needed
fergal 03-31-2002, 12:38 PM i was let down bya german host who so far has taken 11 days to open my account, and its still not open hence ive cancelled my sign up with them, they promised 24 hour setup as well :(
im looking for a flat fee reseller account with good solid support and an option to back up my own clients data would be preffered if possible from control panel,i want to use my own namerservers at no extra cost,i was about to sign up with a uk host who uses this forum but his support is very poor,i cant wait a couple of days for a host to get back to me,i also want an option to go to a dedicated server at any time so a host with a good value range of dedicated servers is essential,id appreciate any first hand experience and recommendations

nmihosting 03-31-2002, 01:59 PM Hi fergal,
You could try Webreseller.net. Their reseller programs are flat fee and include your own nameservers. They also offer dedicated servers, so you would have this option too. Also they use Ensim - which offers a back-up facility in the control panel (something else you said you were looking for).
Hope this is helpful.:)
decebal 03-31-2002, 03:58 PM I'm recomending Alan's splashhost.com (http://www.splashhost.com) because he has a great support and uptime plus you'll get WHM/Cpanel with backup and personalize options.
Also your other requests are there.
Can you tell us the bad support host and also the german host. It really helps us ! ;)
Good luck !
fergal 03-31-2002, 05:14 PM thanks for recommendation leeanne, most useful
also decebal i wasnt sure wether to mention names of companies or not in case anyone thought i was advertising etc, silly arnt i(im new here) first off the german company was xtserver.net and it was a complete nightmare from start to finish, their 24 hour setup didnt even start until they received my application which had to be submitted only by fax to germany(took 2 attempts) and 48 hours for them to find fax!they also said as i lived outside germany(i live in n.ireland) i had to undergo additional security checks and i could only activate my reseller account when i received a letter from them posted from germany with account details inside!I cant believe a company in web hosting uses snailmail to open accounts as well as refusing my email application, after 11 days and no letter i cancelled account, lets hope i get my money back!
The uk host i was looking at is ukhosts4u.com which seems to offer what im looking for except im not overly impressed with support,im still tempted to do business with the guy but i really want excellent support,ie 24/7 and not office hours, ifanyone else can recommend a similar package as ukhosts4u but with 24/7 support id be most grateful
support, price and backup options is main core im comparing in hosts

nmihosting 03-31-2002, 05:47 PM Hi fergal,
I am sorry to hear of your woes with the German host.
I tried to check out ukhosts4u.com but couldn't bring up their website??
I think you will probably find that US hosts are cheaper than the UK ones, and I wouldn't worry to much about using a host that is so far away. Many people from places like the UK and Australia (both very far from US) use US hosts for their reselling needs.
From what you mentioned of your needs a Virtual Private Server (VPS) running Ensim WebAppliance 3.0 would be good for you.
We use Ensim's software and I would certainly recommend it.
I am not sure what your budget is, so places I could recommend might not suit your price range.
You might want to post a request for quote in the requests sections of this forum - state all your needs and hopefully you will get some good offers. (Beware of offers that seem to good to be true - they usually are ;) )
(btw - i'm originally from n.ireland, so you know i must give good sound advise :D)

fergal 03-31-2002, 06:10 PM my apologies leeanne, the url is www.ukhost4u.com
sorry about that, like i say what they are offering is excellent, bar support and the fact i want the option of backing up my clients data myself after hearing a few stories on here etc, they do offer daily backups, but id like to do this as im paranoid about data loss
:)
yes jonny whats the crack?
translates to:

:)

jonny b 03-31-2002, 07:15 PM lol Fergal!
Good job you translated that or our US friends would have been thinking we were drug dealers ;)
Cheers,
nmihosting 04-01-2002, 06:22 AM Hi Fergal,
(what about ye :-)
I checked out the UKHosts4U place. They are using the Plesk Control Panel, which many here recommend. I am not that familiar with it, but I think you should be able to find some hosts here at the forum who use Plesk and offer similar plans to UKHosts4U.
Again, I think it would be a good idea to post a request in the requests area on this as no one can recommend themselves in the main forums.
As for wether it's a good idea to use a host that you have some misgivings about regarding support .... I would trust your instincts.
I read this thread, which you participated in and have to agree about the unlimited thing www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=39964&highlight=ukhost4u
Although tazd9t9 seems to recommend them.
Paul Hughes (someone from UKhost4U) had this to say about unlimited bandwidth in a post I found:
Hi,
We try to aim for that goal. We offer you a bandwidth restriction and as long as the hosting is within US law its all allowed.
Also, maybe UKHost4U is just being honest about when they can provide support. Alot of hosts say they offer 24/7, but in reality if you email them for support on the weekend you wait til Monday to get a response. That doesn't apply to everyone who advertises 24/7 support - but it's good to keep in mind.
