Moved to Web Design and Content.

Send to friends, ask them to take a look and see how you can improve it in their eyes. Have content that search engines will pick up and all should flow smoothly from there :)

I don't think what anon-e-mouse said was very good advice. For a new site it depends on what market you are in. If it is a saturated market, forget the google route, thats a losing battle. If it is really unique, then you may do ok with that route.

So, if its not, what do ya do? Think outside of the box. You will need to do some advertising somehow. PR is one of the best methods if you can get some. With a website and some more info, may be able to help more.

well a trick that costs you a lot of bandwith and doesnt give you a lot of views from the right audience are autosurfers. basicly, you either buy traffic from one of those sites or you register on one yourself and set on your browser to auto-surf websites. you will get i.e. 1 credit per website, which you can exchange for 2 views to your own website. this will get you like 20 quality views out of a total of 1000 views depending on your sites market.

What anon-e-mouse said was very good advice in fact and is a "first principle" for traffic. Sure you can gain immediate traffic with PPC networks and other advertising methods but you will get no long term traction unless your site has excellent content and the SE's can figure out what it is about. In fact, if the content is poor or the design is crummy then your ROI will suffer as people will visit and leave without looking around much.

It's not an "either or" issue it is "both and". Both create a good site with good content and design AND then advertise it if you want immediate visitors.

I agree with what Rich said, and would like to touch on web positioning software. Each piece of software works differently, though what they usually do is use "bad" techniques to raise your SE ranking. If you get caught doing this, your site will lose all search engine ranking.

Naaa. You actually have a pretty decent site concept already and it looks like the content will be made by people adding events to your page.

A few ideas on your specific site (I assume you're asking about how to promote http://www.yourevents.co.nz ):

1. Populate the site with as many events as you know about already by looking in your newspapers or public service announcements, etc.

2. Let non-profits and businesses in your area and surrounding know about your site. They might just use your site to list their event and then link to it or tell people where to go to find information about events.

3. Once you have lots of people starting to come to you for events you might want to introduce a "premium" service where event listers who pay a small fee (say $5-$10) can upload pictures and stuff like that.

Just a few ideas. I think if you go the pro bono route initially with some non-profits you might get some immediate traction for your site.

You have it all sused mate. Thats exactly how things will happen eventually with the 5-10$ ad placements, also once we get traffic we can sell the advertising space also.

Thanks eveyone for your feedback, its fantastic.

Your customers can only buy from you if they know that you exist, hence the basic step for a new site is to create your website presence. You have to identify your market well, the more you identify, more you can be able to target the potential customers directly to your market segment.

While I'll also suggest you to make your presence through organizing demonstrations, exhibition Seminars and Conferences to your local level.
