View Full Version : Bandwidth and Message Boards in Frames

I was just wondering how bandwidth is taken up in this scenario.

Let's say I have a main site (lets call this host1) and a message board running on another (lets call this host2).

If I have the main site on host1 and I use frames to access the msg board from host2, would host1 ever get any increase in the bandwidth used when users post and use the message board? I know host1 would get hits when people access it to get to the message board, but what about the traffic the message board will generate? Is that traffic only a concern for host2?

I hope you understand my question and someone can help answer this. Thanks.

Hi,

Putting your remotely hosted board in a frame is really no different from clicking the url link and entering the site on a new page - or having it open in the same window (as for any other url you go to). You will still be on Host2 where the messageboard is.

A frame only gives the illusion that everything is on the same site, but in actual fact you will be using Host2`s server and bandwidth.

I have an Ezboard which I have now put in a frame on my site. Mainly for aesthetic purposes, but also coz a lot of people have trouble accessing the Ezboard urls (especially from work), so this provided the solution. Ezboard advised me to do this.

The board and bandwidth still remain on Ezboards servers - which is why they charge me $586 a year for the board!! They wouldn`t be able to do that if it was using someone elses bandwidth. ;)

The only thing my server will be using bandwidth-wise is the buttons, background pic, avatars and emoticons which I have customised and stored on my site. I don`t like Ezboards `inbuilt` ones.

I would imagine Host1 would be happy that you are using a remotely hosted board rather than sucking up his resources with an `in-house` one.

Aside from my own board, I also have a panel of links which load similar boards within the frame: again they are all on their own servers, but I didn`t want people leaving the site so effectively brought the other boards to them. :D

Hope that`s put your mind at ease. :)

Thanks loki....that was pretty much what I thought, but I just wanted to be 100% sure. :)
