View Full Version : Going dedicated from reselling...(DNS Question)

I'm thinking of getting a dedicated Win 2000 server instead of contuing to do reselling. I want to be more in control of what gets done to the server.

I have a question about running my own DNS. I'm pretty sure I can use the dedicated web server as one of my name servers by using the DNS Service installed as part of Win 2000. For the second nameserver, I was thinking of using my home based web server. The only problem is that with my DSL connection I get a dynamic IP. I use some of the dyndns services to update my ip contiunuously.

My question is this... if I get a block of say 10 IPs from my dedicated server's company, can I put one of them on my home server so that I can register it as a nameserver?

If not, any good suggestions for providing an offsite second name server?

No, sorry. Most likely they will not be able to route them to your house. Plus, running a secondary DNS server at your house may not be a good idea because if your home connection goes down, so will your DNS server which can cause all kinds of problems.

What you could do is do some DNS swapping with someone else. Find someone who is looking for the same thing and you can run their secondary records and they can do the same for you.

Hope that helps!

Though it is not always the best idea but you could run both off the same box.
