View Full Version : Load Spikes on RAQ3
Gilby 12-29-2000, 06:28 PM I got a RAQ3 from 4webspace from the 'uptime' or 'top' command the load averages are usually below 0.50, but sometimes that increases a lot for a short period to above 5 and the last time I noticed it go to about 15. Going into the admin control panel of the RAQ is one time that it goes up quite a bit (but not every time I go into it). But it also goes up at other times as well. The results from the top command have a few 'mysql' and 'httpd' near the top, but even when it's low it has that too. When the server load is high, then the responce is very slow too.
The RAQ3 has 64 MB of memory and I installed the mysql package for it and installed php4. The main use of the RAQ is for a vBulletin message board which is pretty active (15000 pageviews a day).
So what I am wondering is how can I find out what is causing this to happen and then how can I prevent if from happening?
-Edward- 12-29-2000, 06:33 PM Upgrade your RAM for a starters thats a hell of a big load to put on 64mb ram.
cbaker17 12-29-2000, 08:41 PM Its def. the ram exp on a raq with only 64megs of ram, but the control panels slow whether you have tons of ram or hardly any at all.
(SH)Saeed 12-29-2000, 08:52 PM I would definetly do atleast 128mb of ram. As it is right now I have 128mb and without any hits the server top shows:
Mem: 128040K av, 74976K used, 53064K free..
So you can imagine where you are with 64mb RAM!
It would be nice if 4webhosting.com would lower their RAM prices since all prices have gone done a noticable bit. But I don't know if these boxes use special memory or normal ones.

syanet 12-29-2000, 10:03 PM Can RaQ3's accomadate 512MB's of RAM? http://www.4webspace.com dosen't mention it, but I though I heard somewhere RaQ's can go that high.
eva2000 12-29-2000, 10:51 PM yes, 512mb is available at US$820 if i am correct - i asked Steve :)
vBulletin's that are active like yours need more ram - i suggest for you at least 256mb ram if you only run a vB forum.
i just moved my vB to http://www.ultraspeedusa.com thanks to Daniel and it's handling 1,000+ posts/day and 11 - 17k pageviews/day with 256mb ram - http://animeboards.net/forums/index.php
i installed mysql/php4 on my raq3 with 32mb at 4webspace.com but don't intend any vB's cause it will kill the server - but seeing as you handling quite a bit on 64mb it's reassuring :D
(SH)Saeed 12-29-2000, 10:52 PM If I'm not misstaking, they can handle 512mb of RAM.
Thatīs what I've heard anyways.

:look:
syanet 12-29-2000, 11:19 PM Wow, thanks ahefty price tag. I could probaly get 512MB of RAM for $512 at a noraml retail outet.
websavvy 12-30-2000, 12:00 AM The cost of the server is amazing.
The memory may be a bit pricy, but they have to make their money somewhere.
cbaker17 12-30-2000, 01:06 AM Not to mention that theres a big difference between cheap generic memory and name brand ecc memory, the name brand stuff costs a lot more, plus you have to figure in the fact that they install it for you etc.
Chicken 12-30-2000, 12:31 PM CBaker beat me to it. Exactly. At least it is one-time and not added to the monthly fee like many places do. I don't much care for that, heh.
syanet 12-30-2000, 01:02 PM I'd almost have like ot have the $820 split up over 3-4 months. I can't seem to find a way to take an $820 hit in one month.
thats easy to do just order 128 or 256 megs at a time, each upgrade will only take you offline for a few minutes and im pretty sure you can have it done in the middle of the night.

-Edward- 12-30-2000, 02:59 PM So you could have two lots of 128mb ram slapped in ur server?.

That's nice to know on it not taking too long. I currently have the 64 MB and if I buy more, would that replace it or add it in another slot? How many slots are there for ram upgrades?
syanet 12-30-2000, 05:09 PM Quick question Steve: Why are the prices asymetrical? If a buy 128MB for $111 then purchase 128MB 3 more times for a total of 512MB I pay only $444. However if I buy 512MB in a lump some it's $860. Why is that?
Chicken 12-30-2000, 09:54 PM Off the top of my head, and without looking at documentation, I believe there are two slots.

Thats where they make there real money :)
you guys should email me directly aboutthe ram pricing and what you would pay for upgrades as to the number of slots chicken was right there are two slots each can hold a 256 meg dimm, (and no it is not standard off the shelf ram)
