On April 24, 2002 Yahoo will no longer be providing free POP3 email.

I am looking for a good web host that also provides POP3 email services. As far as price goes I would like to stay under $10 per month. I only need two POP3 email accounts, but the more the merrier.

My website will be a small personal one so I think 50Mb should be fine. It will host some pictures for the family and some files (~2Mb) for other stuff. If I get crazy I may add a small private forum for around 20 members. I only plan on a couple of hits per day but several GB of bandwidth will leave plenty of room for error.

The hosts that I have been looking at are:
www.your-site.com $5 per month
www.myacen.com $5 per month
www.hostculture.com $7.50 per month

Your-site.com offers 25 POP3 accounts which is way more than enough. Myacen.com offers 10 POP3 accounts which is still plenty.

Before I found this forum I was going to go with your-site.com, but through searching myacen.com seems to be the one to go with.

All three have an excellent price for the basic accounts. However myacen and Hostculture do offer bigger accounts which leaves me more room for growth if I need it.

As far as hostculture.com goes, heh can you say over kill, I don’t think I need all of that space. If I do eventually need it I don’t think it will be that hard to move over.

The main question that I have is will it matter where my host is located? Myacen is located in Australia and your-site is in Massachusetts. The people that will be accessing my site are all in the US. Does location really make a difference on the upload/download speeds. My guess is that it does not, in fact when I pinged both myacen.com and your-site.com myacen came out on top.

The other question that I have is what is MySQL and do I need it? Your-site.com offers 0, Myacen offers 1 and Hostculture.com offers 3. What I am trying to ask is, should it be a deciding factor in the host I go with? Links, books, help, etc. would be much appreciated, I’m still looking into it.

So is Myacen the host to be with our is there another host that I have missed somewhere?

One last thing, thank goodness for this forum! My headache is gone and I’ve got my search narrowed down a little. I’ll probably be hanging around here for a while now. :)

There are plenty of hosts that would suit your needs. I suggest checking the special offers forum, as well as posting a request in the requests forum; you may end up getting a great deal!

Thanks, I will do that!

But for right now these are the two questions that I have:

Location will not matter for small personal sites. You may notice differences when you are downloading a large file from a site...

MySql is a database system. pretty much an industry standard and the easiest (IMO) to use. As a general rule of thumb for all features listed with a hosting plan, "If you don't know what it is, you probably won't need it." If you want to learn more about mySQL, I'm sure a simple google search will turn up some results.

In this case no it won't. While Myacen is an Australian company, their servers are US based (Rackshack actually, or at least their main site is).
